Management of Lagarosiphon major in Ireland s Great Western Lake Fisheries Joe Caffrey Inland Fisheries Ireland RAFTS Perth, Scotland 21 st March 2013

Lough Corrib One of the Great Western Lake Fisheries in Ireland Special Area of Conservation (SAC) unique ecology Internationally renowned salmonid fishery (up to 2,000 boats per day) 17,820 hectares in area (c. 180 sq kilometres) Alkaline lake with deep upper and shallow lower basins Important tourist destination Main water supply for Galway city and county

Lagarosiphon major (Curly waterweed, oxygen weed) Highly invasive aquatic Native to Southern Africa Oxygenating weed Artificial watercourses 1 st confirmed in L Corrib in 2005 Only natural lake is L. Corrib

Rinerroon Bay, Lough Corrib pre-lagarosiphon major

Rinerroon Bay, Lough Corrib post-lagarosiphon (2005) ,640 tonnes (wet wt) ,700 tonnes (wet wt)

No natural enemies in Ireland Why is Lagarosiphon a Problem? Extremely fast growth rate

No natural enemies in Ireland Why is Lagarosiphon a Problem? Extremely fast growth rate Dispersal through fragmentation Canopy forming excludes native plants

No natural enemies in Ireland Why is Lagarosiphon a Problem? Extremely fast growth rate Dispersal through fragmentation Canopy forming excludes native plants Alters insect community structure - particularly favouring Zebra mussel

No natural enemies in Ireland Why is Lagarosiphon a Problem? Extremely fast growth rate Dispersal through fragmentation Canopy forming excludes native plants Alters macroinvertebrate community structure Creates improved conditions for non-salmonid fishes

Why is Lagarosiphon a Problem? Flood hazard (restricting discharge through lower lake)

No Lagarosiphon in lower lake

Control of L. major and Restoration of Natural Communities in Ireland Lagarosiphon major 2012 n = 166 Still no Lagarosiphon in lower lake

Area potentially occupied by Lagarosiphon ~11,000 hectares

What is being done to resolve the Lagarosiphon problem? Life cycle studies (find weak link) Mechanical harvesting Light exclusion Hand removal (using divers) (Herbicides) Biological control With funding from EU Life+

Life Cycle Research Reproduction is vegetative (only female plants are present in Ireland) Damage to root node is highly traumatic for the plant Two distinct morphological phases: Tall, canopy-forming growth (winter / spring) Collapsed condition (summer / autumn) Erect Collapsed

Mechanical Cutting in Lough Corrib Winter / Spring Traditional cut uses reciprocating blades Deep cut using paired V-blades

Harvesting Cut Weed in Lough Corrib

Bob s Island, Lough Corrib

Light Exclusion using Jute Matting Summer / Autumn Aquatic plants require light for growth Open-weave fabric - jute or hessian Natural fibre Biodegrades totally Saturates and sinks quickly

Light Exclusion using Jute Matting* Preliminary trials proved highly effective Lagarosiphon died rapidly beneath jute Native charophyte vegetation grew through matting within 4 months Dense meadows established within 10 months No Lagarosiphon has grown through geotextile > 150,000 sq m of jute now laid in Corrib Technique being employed in no. continents * Caffrey et al. (2010) Aquatic Invasions

Lagarosiphon Management in Lough Corrib Between 2008 and 2013 > 80 ha of Lagarosiphon cleared from Corrib No large canopy-forming stands No Lagarosiphon in lower Lough Corrib Angling has dramatically improved Biodiversity recovered in impacted areas Programme for ongoing control and maintenance in place

What is being done to stop the Further spread of Lagarosiphon and other AIS? Biosecurity Measures taken to protect against the introduction, spread and negative impacts associated with biological invasions, including pathogens Bloody Red Shrimp

Biosecurity in Great Western Lakes Region Having managed Lagarosiphon in Corrib, must stop spread to other fisheries Monitoring Surveillance Education Bloody Red Shrimp

Biosecurity in Great Western Lakes Region Having managed Lagarosiphon in Corrib, must stop spread to other fisheries Monitoring Surveillance Education Cooperation Bloody Red Shrimp

Practical Disinfection Demo at Powerboat Launch in Lough Mask

Biosecurity in Great Western Lakes Region Successful to date but must remain vigilant!!!!!!!!!!!! Shrimp

New IFI Biosecurity Initiatives Cleaning / Disinfection for Key Stakeholders Angler Disinfection Kits the newest addition to our suite of tools
