2 2030 Agenda Process September 2015: 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by 193 MSs 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with169 targets for These complex targets has brought with it a critical challenge in defining a workable monitoring framework. It required evidencebased global monitoring framework for 2030 Agenda. March 2016: A global indicator framework comprising 230 indicators to monitor the 169 targets of the 2030 Agenda was agreed at the UN Statistical Commission 2

3 2030 Agenda Process March 2017: UN Statistical Commission adopted the global indicator framework for SDGs and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development The global indicator framework includes, inter alia, the initial set of indicators that will be yearly refined and comprehensively reviewed by the UN Statistical Commission at its fifty-first session in 2020 and its fifty-sixth session in Indicator framework- voluntary and country-let instrument Such set of indicators will be complemented by indicators at the regional and national levels which will be developed by Member States Countries and UN funds and programmes to intensify their support for strengthening data collection and statistical capacity building Enhanced communication and coordination to avoid duplicate efforts, ensure consistency and reduce response burdens on countries. 3

4 Global indicator framework Tier I: indicator is conceptually clear, established methodology and standards are available and data are regularly produced by countries; Tier II: indicator is conceptually clear, established methodology and standards are available but data are not regularly produced by countries; Tier III: no established methodology or standards are available for the indicator or methodology/standards are being developed or tested for the indicator. 4

5 Global indicator framework International agencies have an important role to play in global reporting, as they ensure that national data are comparable and aggregated at sub-regional, regional and global levels, Data should continue to be reported by governments to custodian international agencies which will then transmit them to the UN Statistics Division, Each global SDG indicator has been assigned a custodian agency which is responsible for collecting data from national sources, providing the storyline for the annual global SDG progress report, providing the indicator documentation, working on further methodological development, and contributing to country statistical capacity building. 5

6 SDG 15 Target 15.1 By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements. Indicator : Forest area as a proportion of total land area (From FAO) Indicator : Proportion of important sites for terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity that are covered by protected areas, by ecosystem type (From IUCN) Target 15.2 By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally. Indicator : Progress towards sustainable forest management (From FAO) 6

7 SDG 15 Target 15.3 By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world. Indicator : Proportion of land that is degraded over total land area (From UNCCD) Target 15.4 By 2030, ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development Indicator : Coverage by protected areas of important sites for mountain biodiversity (From IUCN) Indicator : Mountain Green Cover Index (From FAO) 7

8 SDG 15 Target 15.6 Ensure fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources and promote appropriate access to such resources. Indicator : Number of countries that have adopted legislative, administrative and policy frameworks to ensure fair and equitable sharing of benefits (From FAO) Target 15.9 By 2020, integrate ecosystem and biodiversity values into national and local planning, development processes, poverty reduction strategies and accounts. Indicator : Progress towards national targets established in accordance with Aichi Biodiversity Target 2 of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity (No metadata submitted) 8
