2 Who we are The Amazon Institute for Environmental Research (Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia - IPAM) has 20 years of experience working in the largest rainforest in the world. It was created by a group of researchers to contribute to the sustainable development of the Amazon, providing scientific support to encourage the preservation of the ecological integrity of regional ecosystems, with social justice and economic prosperity. Today IPAM has a talented and team of 140 people, distributed in nine offices in the Amazon region, all dedicated to find innovative solutions for current and new risks to the integrity of the forest and those who depend on it. Visit the website and learn more about our work: Science, education, and innovation for an environmentally sound, economically prosperous, and socially equitable Amazon.

3 How we operate From the beginning, in 1995, IPAM maintains the view that the Amazon s economic growth will be established by environmental conservation, which provides the natural balance necessary for the well-being of the people of the region. Since then, the institute confirmed the importance of its work proposal, which is based on research of social, economic and environmental impacts, applied in the field, along with the proposition of viable solutions to the Amazon s reality. IPAM has recently restructured its strategy and operation model into focal areas, which reflect the existing threats for the conservation of the Amazon, such as the depletion of natural resources, pressure on traditional peoples, and the impact caused by infrastructure projects, with new challenges, such as population growth in the region, the quest for modernization of rural production, and climate change.

4 Main actions 1995 IPAM is founded in Belém Launch of Risque 98, fire-forecasting tool that helped establish fire control legislation Publication of a study on the negative environmental effects of investments in infrastructure in the Amazon; it influences the most important Brazilian infrastructure program, Avança Brasil Beginning of the Seca-Floresta Project: rain is excluded from the Amazonian forest area to assess the effects of a future dry weather on vegetation. Building, with partners, of the Proambiente, the first payment program for environmental services aimed at farmers in the Amazon Creation, with partners, of the Climate Observatory (Observatório do Clima), a network of Brazilian entities COP 9: launch, with partners, of the Compensated Reduction of Deforestation concept, which contributed to build the REDD+ mechanism and the Amazon Fund Beginning of the Amazon Savannization Project: controlled fires help to understand the changes suffered by the forest due to the interaction of deforestation, fire, and climate change.

5 2007 Participation in the creation of a consortium for the sustainable development of BR-163 road, the main voice in search of improvements in the region Proposition and assistance of the first consortium of Amazonian cities - Consórcio Intermunicipal para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável da Transamazônica e Xingu - to fight deforestation and forest fire IPAM and partners demonstrate the importance of protected areas and indigenous lands for climate balance and contribute to the National Policy on Indigenous Territories Management Launch of the Sustainable Settlements Program in the Amazon, which for the first time establishes an environmental services payment program to small farmers The 2013 Chico Mendes de Florestania Award is granted to IPAM for contributing to the sustainable development in the state of Acre. IPAM and partners found the Forest Code Observatory (Observatório do Código Florestal), focused on monitoring and contributing to the full implementation of the new law Creation of SOMAI, Indigenous Amazon Observation and Monitoring System. Finalist for the 2014 Social Entrepreneur Award of the Folha de São Paulo newspaper IPAM and partners publish a scientific study demonstrating the impacts of deforestation on the regional climate in the Brazilian Amazon. IPAM publishes the most comprehensive environmental assessment and implementation status report of the settlements in the Amazon.
