2 What is a Community Forest? In British Columbia, a community forest can be described as any forestry operation managed by a local government, community group, or First Nation for the benefit of the entire community. ( By providing communities with greater flexibility to manage local forests, government seeks to: Provide long-term opportunities for achieving a range of community objectives, values & priorities Diversify the use of and benefits derived from the community forest agreement area Provide social and economic benefits to British Columbia Promote community involvement and participation 2 Foster innovation Undertake community forestry consistent with sound principles of environmental stewardship that reflect a broad spectrum of values Promote communication and strengthen relationships between aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities and persons Advocate forest worker safety
3 History of Development 1998 City and Band both expressed interest at start of program Both kept their interest alive with successive governments 2007 City was invited to apply for 20,000 m City and Band wrote a Letter of Understanding 2011 Minister amended invitation to both communities for 40,000 m 3 Band contributed 17,000 m3 replaceable volume from their Forest and Range Opportunity Agreement with the Province 2013 Application submitted 2014 Agreement signed, planning underway, Standing Committee created 3

Landscape Biodiversity - Riparian: to conserve, at the landscape level, water quality, fish habitat, wildlife habitat and biodiversity associated with Riparian Areas Mule deer Follow the specific practise guidance established in the General Wildlife Measures Establish riparian buffers on streams and wetlands according to the FPPR default values Protect high-value wetlands moose (Land Use Order) Manage lakeshores according to the direction in the Land Use Order
