F/H 1 (a) What is an ecosystem? Section 1 An introduction to ecosystems (2 marks) F/H 1 (b) What is the difference between a food chain and a food web? (2 marks) F/H 1 (c) Study Figure 1 which shows part of a deciduous forest ecosystem. Figure 1 1 (c) (i) Explain the importance of the tree in the food web.

(3 marks) F/H 1 (c) (ii) Explain how nutrients in the tree are recycled. (4 marks) Section 1: Target Forward Target What went well: Overall mark/ percentage Even better if: My response is: Where are you on the Geography dartboard of success? 180! Working above target Bulls eye! Working on target Double 20! Working one grade below target Number 1 - Off target and need to aim higher!

Section 2 Tropical Rainforests F/H 2 (a) (i) Outline one cause of tropical rainforest deforestation. (2 marks) F 2 (a) (ii) There are many effects of tropical rainforest destruction. For each of the following statements decide whether the effect is economic, social or political. Write economic, social, or political in the box next to each statement. Locals do not have immunity to new diseases Governments try to manage the forest The sale of timber reduces national debt (3 marks) H 2 (b) Study Figure 2, an extract from a geographical publication about an ecolodge in the tropical rainforest in Costa Rica, a country in Central America. Figure 2 On the Caribbean coast, the Selva Bananito lodge provides holiday accommodation and associated activities. The lodge was built from wood discarded by loggers and the number of guests is limited. There is no electricity; solar energy is used to heat the water. Biodegradable soaps are used for washing. Glass and plastic are recycled. Water used for drinking and cooking is purified using bacteria, enzymes and water lilies. The owners have set up a charitable trust to educate people about the rainforest and to provide activities such as jungle hikes and bird watching. 2 (b) (i) Explain why this lodge is attractive to ecotourists. (4 marks)

F/H 2 (b) (ii) Describe how selective logging and replanting are examples of sustainable management in tropical rainforests. (6 marks) Section 2: Target Forward Target What went well: Overall mark/ percentage Even better if: My response is: Where are you on the Geography dartboard of success? 180! Working above target Bulls eye! Working on target Double 20! Working one grade below target Number 1 - Off target and need to aim higher!

Section 3 Hot Deserts 3 (a) Study Figure 3, photographs of vegetation in a hot desert area. Figure 3 F 3 (a) (i) Give a different characteristic for each type of vegetation shown in photographs A,B and C. A. B. C. (3 marks) H 3 (a) (i) Using Figure 3, explain how vegetation adapts to the climate and soils of a hot desert area.

(6 marks) E Tips: Level One (0-4 marks) Simple statements. Reference made to either climate or soils. Level Two (5 6 marks) Linked statements. Reference made to both climate and soils. F 3 (a) (iii) Use a case study of a hot desert area in a richer part of the world to describe how people use the area for commercial farming and irrigation. (6 marks) E Tips: Level One (0-4 marks) Simple statements. Reference made to either commercial farming or irrigation. Level Two (5 6 marks) Linked statements. Reference made to both commercial farming and irrigation.

H 3 (a) (iii) Use a case study of a hot desert area in a richer part of the world to describe how people try to manage the area in a sustainable way. (8 marks) E Tips: Level One (0-4 marks) Simple statements. No case study. Reference to use of the desert only. Level Two (5 6 marks) Simple statements. Named case study. Reference to use of the desert only. Some link to sustainability. Level Three (7 8 marks) Simple statements. Named case study with specific detail. Links made to sustainability throughout.

Section 3: Target Forward Target What went well: Overall mark/ percentage Even better if: My response is: Where are you on the Geography dartboard of success? 180! Working above target Bulls eye! Working on target Double 20! Working one grade below target Number 1 - Off target and need to aim higher!

Section 4 Temperate Deciduous Forests F/H 4 (a) (i) Study Figure 4, a photograph of a temperate deciduous woodland. Figure 4 Describe the features of the vegetation at X, Y and Z. X Y Z (3 marks) F/H 4 (b) Study Figure 5, a 1:50000 OS map extract of part of Epping Forest, a deciduous forest near London.

Figure 5 4 (b) (i) Measure the distance along the A104 from the roundabout at to the road junction at km (2 marks) 4 (b) (ii) Use Figure 5 to describe recreation activities in Epping Forest.

(3 marks) F 4 (c) Describe the climate of temperate deciduous woodland areas. (4 marks) H 4 (c) Explain how vegetation in a temperate deciduous woodland adapts to the climate and soils and is in harmony with them.

(8 marks) E Tips: Level One (0-4 marks) Simple statements. List like. Describes how vegetation adapts to climate or soils, with a hint of explanation. Level Two (5 6 marks) Begins to develop statements. Partial explanation. Links made between adaptation and reason. Some reference made to both climate and soils. Slight reference to idea of harmony/ balance. Section 4: Target Forward Level Three (7 8 marks) Develops statements. Explanation is purposeful as explicit links are made between adaptation and reason. Clear reference to the idea of harmony/ balance with vegetation and climate and soils. Target What went well: Overall mark/ percentage Even better if: My response is: Where are you on the Geography dartboard of success? 180! Working above target Bulls eye! Working on target Double 20! Working one grade below target Number 1 - Off target and need to aim higher!
