1 Hollygate Wood - SOLD, Nottinghamshire - Nearly 3 ¾ acres, 39,000 The largest trees in Hollygate Wood are predominately tall straight grown pines, but with a good mix of oak, ash and sycamore. Despite the height of the established trees, plenty of light reaches down to the woodland floor, allowing lots of self-set hardwood trees to begin the cycle of regeneration. A great deal of food is on offer to woodland birds in the understory of sycamore, wych elm and ash, with some oak and willow, as well as from the more common fruiting trees of elder, hawthorn, yew and holly. At ground level, wild raspberries, rosehips and bramble are dotted among ferns with lots of waist height saplings coming along. On entering the wood from the track at the ride-stop entrance, it is apparent that the wood is mainly quite level; there is a space here for a vehicle and trailer or simply room to stack firewood prior to collection or for seasoning. Close by and convenient for contemplating the wood, a rustic bench is situated in a clearing, next to a large mature sycamore tree. The north western corner of the wood has a gentle slope downhill towards the staked boundary, while the other three boundaries of the wood are formed by tracks or rides with the greater Cotgrave Forest on all four sides. The embrace of the surrounding woodland, gives Hollygate Wood a much greater feeling and benefits the resident and transient wildlife equally. Ideal for an owner who would like to immerse themselves in woodland activity, Hollygate Wood could be selectively managed to bring on the best of the emerging hardwood trees: perhaps shaping the canopy for the next generation by removing some pine and returning the wood to its broad-leafed origins. Equally it would also suit those who just want to enjoy observing nature as there is so much wildlife residing in and passing through the wood. The wood takes its name from nearby Hollygate Lane. Although, today, gate means a hinged opening, the original word is derived from the old Norse gata meaning way or road, brought over by the Vikings and in common use in the North of England. The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
