1 Overview This standard is about identify community and social forestry opportunities and. This will include identifying the opportunities for local and wider community participation and involvement. Community forestry is a term used to describe a forest established and managed to involve local people and organized according to local circumstances. It includes all aspects of public participation in forest ownership, management and involvement e.g. community involvement in the management, lease or purchase of forest land, or tourism, access or informal recreation. The forest manager interacts with the wider public through consultation, direct or indirect involvement. Social forestry is an aspect of community forestry, where a forestry based intervention delivers a social outcome for the community. Your work must conform to all relevant legislation and codes of practice when carrying out this work. This standard is for all those involved in improving local communities and identifying the opportunities that may be available to involve the local community in a forest or woodland development. 1

2 Performance criteria You must be able to: 1. identify risks and health and safety implications of wider public involvement in the forest 2. identify what level of neighbour, community or wider public involvement relates to the forest area 3. identify opportunities and constraints relating to wider public engagement 4. identify statutory, formal and informal public access to the forest area 5. identify methods to engage with the wider public, such as participatory appraisals or neighbour notices 6. analyse available information to identify opportunities for community involvement 7. plan public and community access, informal recreation and leisure 8. prepare specifications for local/community involvement 9. ensure your plans comply with health and safety requirements and industry recognised standards 10. encourage the sustainability of the forest area for future generations 2

3 Knowledge and understanding You need to know and understand: 1. the importance of public consultation and engagement where required and/or appropriate 2. resources that can be used to engage the community 3. media opportunities available to support and promote the project 4. the role of community, urban and rural development within different UK national areas 5. the codes of access as they relate to different UK national areas, in particular Countryside Rights of Way and Scottish Land Reform bill 6. the right of community purchase (Scotland specific) 7. recreation and activity opportunities available to the community from the area 8. the legal implications of public access, specifically relating to forest owner liability, title and insurance 9. conflicting issues around public use and managing the environment 10. sustainable methods to ensure the future use of the site 11. the implications of community involvement to public health and safety 12. your responsibilities under relevant environmental and health and safety legislation 3
