Action FP0903 Research, monitoring and modeling in the study of climate change and air pollution impacts on forest ecosystems, Rome, 5-7 Dr. Ovidiu BADEA ICAS

1.1. Implementation of the priority actions of the policies and strategies in forestry concerning air pollution and climate change effects at national, european and international level Respond to regional joint initiatives of developing research and scientific knowledge on forest ecosystems status and their capacity to provide goods and services To provide long-term scientific information on ecosystems status and their components under the action of various stress factors (air pollution, climate change etc.) Establishment of a large scientific consortium and infrastructure for integrated research and studies based on harmonized methodologies at national and international level Creation of a common database available and comparable at national and international level.

Forest Research/Monitoring programs implemented: Long-term effects of air pollution on selected forest ecosystem in the Retezat National Park (USDA Forest Service - ICAS). Long-term effects of air pollution on selected forest ecosystem in the Bucegi Natural Park (EPAEFOR) (RAR ICAS, Universities, USDA Forest Service, Romsilva). Long-term effects of air pollution and climate changes on selected forest ecosystem in the Bucegi Natural Park and Piatra Craiului National Park since 2008 (Romsilva - ICAS). Long-term effects of air pollution and climate changes on selected forest ecosystem in the Retezat National Park (GEDEOFOR) since 2009 (RAR - ICAS). Environmental quality and pressures assessment across Europe: the LTER network as an integrated and shared system for ecosystem monitoring (ENVEUROPE LIFE+) since 2010.

Research, monitoring and modeling in the study of climate change and air pollution impacts on forest ecosystems, Rome, 5-7 Air pollution and biodiversity Carpathian Network 26 Sites (since 1997) In 1997, a network of 26 sites was placed for O3, NO2, SO2 and NH3 concentration measurements Vegetation biodiversity was also assessed during and periods.

RODENDRONET Romanian dendrochronological network Over 110 growth index series were build, mostly for coniferous species, covering all the mountain ecological regions and the period The network is permanently updated and extended, including new species and sites.

Carpathian Growth Dynamics Monitoring Network in Romania 10 continuous radial growth monitoring site using point dendrometers, were established on 2008 for spruce, stone pine, silver fir, beech and larch.

Institutional support for Carpathians Networks: International level: MRI USDA Forest Service LTER Europe ILTER Association for Tree-Ring Research ATR National level: Forest Research and Management Institute ICAS National Forest Administration ROMSILVA Romanian Authority for Research Romanian Public Authority for Silviculture

Forest Research/Monitoring programs implemented: Evaluation of ozone air pollution and its phytotoxic potential in the Carpathian forests (USDA Forest Service - ICAS). Effects of forest health on biodiversity with emphasis on air pollution in the Carpathian mountains (USDA Forest Service - ICAS). Effects of ambient ozone on swiss stone pine (Pinus Cembra) in the Tatra and Retezat Mountains, central Europe (USDA Forest Service - ICAS). Climate sensitivity of european beech (Fagus sylvatica) and Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst) at their south-eastern distribution limit under global changes (RAR ICAS). Climatic sensitivity of Pinus nigra Arnold in Slovenia and Romania under actual climatic changes - challenges for sustainable forest management (RAR - ICAS).

Continuation of forest monitoring activities in order to determine the vulnerability and adaptation of forests under the combined effects of climate change and air pollution on forest vegetation Continuation of long-term ecological research at national level (LTER) and their integration in joint projects at european (LTER Europe) and international (ILTER) level Completion of forest monitoring and LTER networks integration at different levels. Development of research in Carpathian Mountains in cooperation with Alps research networks under the MRI umbrella. Harmonization of National Forest Inventory methodologies for forest resources evaluation and forest ecosystems services quantifying.
