Here after, the we started the data cleaning and management in Infostat of the individual forest inventory databases. The most time consuming work was the basic debugging of the compiled treespecies list in Infostat at first and later on in FDiversity. Meetings were also held with Brian Finnegan concerning Functional diversity; Miguel Cifuentes Jara concerning validating local allometric/volumetric equations. The second week with the guidance of Fernando Casanoves and the help of Alejandra, we focussed more on useful tools of Infostat in estimating biomass; brief introduction on regression analysis. Also a look was taken at the treespecies list and each database of the different components in order to indentify information gaps. In the second week the debugging of the treespecies list was continued. Working on the species list of the inventory and logging databases in order to harmonize those

2 Actions to be taken in the next three months and by whom: Continue working on database cleaning and management to prepare the databases for the estimation of biomass by the end of July A.Sewdien; S.Crabbe; V.Wortel; Ch.Sanches; M.Sanches Distribution: (Copies to) Divide the plots into the categories of Chave 2005 equation: moist, wet and dry in order to know which equation should be used S.Crabbe; V.Wortel, A.Ospina Pedraza; A.Sewdien; Ch.Sanches Map is requested with the overview of the Plot locations are needed S. Crabbe Alejandra Ospina Pedraza from CATIE s side will share a dropbox folder in which the cleaned datasets which are ready to be processed should be put in A.Ospina Pedraza Demonstrate the use of Infostat for debugging data to technical/research assistents. It is highly recommended to facilitate a short course for technical/research assistents to use Infostat in data debugging and management. This will support researchers in sufficiently analysing data. Continue strengthening capacity concerning data analysis using Infostat, if possible propose a course based on the needs of both CELOS and SBB V.Wortel & A.Sewdien Workout two research proposals on 1) validating volumetric equations of Jonkers and 2) effects of silvicultural treatments on the functional diversity. Both these proposals could be part of the FAO project, CELOS is currently working on V.Wortel & SBB Continue collaboration with both Brian Finnegan and Miguel Cifuentes Jara on both research proposals V. Wortel; B. Finnegan; M. Cifuentes CATIE is proposing the following for August: Present the results of the study during a workshop to the stakeholders. Have an in depth follow up meeting with the team on the results of this study and on other the topics like Functional diversity, calculation of carbon, allometric models SBB & CATIE CATIE is going to prepare a paper on proposal for the next steps. In the case of logging activity data Suriname has to determine the threshold for the biomass/ha or number of trees per ha. Suriname also needs to determine which the next steps are CATIE & SBB Translate the manual on analyses for forest inventory data, so that Suriname can practise more regarding data analyses for different topics - CATIE The default values for emission factor for damaged and infrastructure can be derived from Guyana s estimations and make the calculations- Ch.Sanches & CATIE

3 State-of-the-art study on forest emission factors SBB-Suriname: 4.2 National experts from Suriname trained at CATIE in Costa Rica, June 2016 Agenda Data base management and estimation of emission factors training June 12th-25th, Background Suriname is currently in its REDD+ Readiness phase for which a REDD+ National Strategy is being developed. The Strategy includes the establishment and submission of the first FRL/FREL to the UNFCCC, by December For the FRL/FREL, according to Decision 11/CP.19, historic data on activities and emission factors will be provided by the National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS), including the Measuring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) function, and will be adjusted to the national circumstances. During the first half of 2016, in preparation of the formulation of the first FRL/FREL, several studies delivering input for the FRL/FREL will be compiled. One of these studies is a State-ofthe-art study: Best estimates for emission factors and carbon stocks for Suriname. This study will provide the best possible estimates for the Emission Factors based on existing information and on different forest transitions and forest management types. In addition to informing the FRL/FREL, this study will be a starting point for the design of the multipurpose National Forest Inventory (NFI) for Suriname. The Foundation for Forest Management and Production Control (SBB) is responsible for the FRL/FREL and design of the NFMS, including the NFI. For the State-of-the-art study: Best estimates for emission factors and carbon stocks for Suriname, SBB has chosen to collaborate with the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) 1, based in Costa Rica. The study will be led by CATIE in close partnership with SBB and in collaboration of other SBB key partners; using a methodology that guarantees capacitybuilding of national experts in Suriname. Objective: To train Suriname national experts on allometric equations development and validation, on database management processes, and on carbon stocks and emission factors calculations.
