2 Observance of International Ozone Day 2015 Introduction: The International Ozone Day 2015 was observed throughout Bangladesh on 16 September 2015 with due importance as per decision of the United Nations. The observance of the day had been as elsewhere in the world with renewed expression of solidarity with the international community to create awareness on the adverse impacts of the Ozone Layer Depletion. The 30 th anniversary of Vienna Convention also observed along with International Ozone Day. The Department of Environment, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of the People s Republic of Bangladesh undertook various programmes to mark the day. The Program included children painting competition, outreach activities, special supplement on the daily newspapers, discussions and so on. Special Programme: A special programme held at CIRDAP Auditorium, Dhaka on 16 September Mr. Anwar Hossain Manju, MP, Hon ble Minister, Ministry of Environment and Forests was present as Chief Guest in the program. Hon ble Deputy Minister for Environment and Forests, Mr. Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, MP was present as special guest. Mr. Nick Guest of the special programme on the occasion of IOD 2015 Beresford, Deputy Country Director, UNDP Bangladesh attended the programme as Guest of Honour. Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed chaired the programme. Director General, Department of Envrionemt, Mr. Md. Raisul Alam Mondal, and Project Director of All ODS Projects and Additional Director General Quazi Sarwar Imtiaz Hashmi were also present at the programme. Winners of different competitions held on the occasions of International Ozone Day and World Environment Day, officials from government organization and non-government organization, representatives from different associations, stakeholders and media were present. 2

3 Hon ble minister for Environment and Forests, Mr. Anwar Hossain Manju, MP in his speech, stressed the need for creating awareness about the importance of ozone layer and possible impacts on nature caused by ozone layer depletion. He also reiterated the commitment of Bangladesh Government to phase-out remaining ODSs. He urged the developed countries to contribute more to address environmental concerns for developing countries. He handed over prizes to the winners of different competitions held on the occasions of International Ozone Day and World Environment Day. Minister, Ministry of Environment and Forests is distributing crest among one of the winners of Paining Competition. Champions of the Earth award. He thanked for organizing the celebration of the International Ozone Day Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests chaired the special function. He thanked the audience for their participation. He informed the audience about the phase-out activities of Bangladesh and mentioned the challenges of the remaining phase-out programme. He thanked the implementing agencies for their cooperation. 4 Mr. Nick Beresford, Deputy Country Director, UNDP Bangladesh appreciated the Government initiatives for the protection of the ozone layer and reiterated UNDP s commitment to assist the GOB to address the environmental issues. Mr. Nick Beresford hoped to work with the government in other environmental issues. Mr. Md. Raisul Alam Mondal, DG, DoE is giving his speech on IOD Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests is delivering his speech. Mr. Md. Raisul Alam Mondal, Director General, DoE in his speech, said that Department of Environment is working for the protection of ozone layer since He reiterated the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol. He recalled all the projects implemented by the DoE. He thanked the implementing agencies for their out support and cooperation. Hashmi welcomed the guests and participants. In his keynote presentation, he informed the audience about ozone, the ozone layer, harmful consequence of the ozone layer depletion, Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol, and activities undertaken by Bangladesh for the preservation of ozone layer. 5 Children s Painting Competition A Children Painting Competition was organized on August 28, 2015 on the occasion of International Ozone Day. Two hundred and fifty children participated in the competition. The competition was grouped as A (below 7 years), B (7 years below 11 years), C (11 years below 16 years) and D (Children with disabilities). Three best painters were selected from each group. The four special Children (Autistic) were selected as winners in Group D. A view of Children s Painting Competition on eve of IOD 2015 Special Supplement Director General, DoE and Project Director of all ODS Projects are inspecting and inspiring the children on the painting competition Special supplement was brought out in four major dailies on the occasion of International Ozone Day. In his message, the Hon ble President urged the ministry of Environment and Forests, Department of Environment, mass media and all concerned to make tireless efforts to create awareness at the grassroots level through observing the day. Appreciating the theme of this year's Ozone Day, he said the observance of the 30 years of efforts by the signatories to the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol is time-befitting. The Hon ble President pointed out that it is essential for all countries, rich or poor, to take united efforts to protect the ozone layer. "I hope the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) will take appropriate steps to this end," he added. In her message, Hon ble Prime Minister hoped that people of the country will be aware through the observance of Ozone Day and the common people will refrain themselves from using goods which have adverse impact on ozone layer. She said the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol are playing remarkable role in protection of lives on the earth. The Prime Minister wished success of all programs chalked up on the occasion of the International Ozone Day. The special supplement in the daily newspapers also contained article of Director General of the Department of Environment. 5

6 Outreach Activities Different outreach activities were undertaken on the occasion of the International Ozone Day. A poster was published on the observance the International Ozone Day Poster and video clipping on ozone layer depletion were distributed through Deputy Commissioner s office, DoE district offices, refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) associations and District Information offices to make the people aware about the ozone layer depletion. Display boards on the protection of ozone layer were also displayed in the important roads of Dhaka city. Radio and TV talk show were aired on the occasion of this day. TV scroll and TV spots were also aired. Besides, mobile phoe short messages on the observance of International Ozone Day sent through every Poster published for IOD 2015 mobile phone operator. Wide media coverage was made on the programme undertaken for the International Ozone Day. Bangladesh Betar (Radio) and Bangladesh Television (BTV) broadcasted the messages of the H.E President and the Hon'ble Prime Minister. A discussion programme was held on 16 September 2015 in Bangladesh Television participated by the Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed; Director General of Department of Environment, Mr. Md. Raisul Alam Mondal; Additional Director General of Department of Environment, Mr. Quazi Sarwar Imtiaz Hashmi; and Refrigeration and Air-conditioning (RAC) Association representative Mr. Md. Lutfar Rahman. Channel I, a private TV channel also telecasted a discussion programme on the occasion of IOD. The discussants were Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Secretary, MOEF; Director General, DoE Mr. Md. Raisul Alam Mondal; and Additional Director General DoE and Project Director of All ODS Projects Mr. Quazi Sarwar Imtiaz Hashmi. 6
