It aptly expresses the views of the founding fathers of Fort Cox College that College Graduation should use their skills unselfishly in the service of the community as a whole, rather than purely selfish ends. DEPARTMENTAL MISSION To continue offering well recognized forestry education and training that would meaningfully contribute to the development and /or growth of the industry locally and internationally. 7

8 FORESTRY PROGRAMME Fort Cox Diploma programme is designed to cater for the needs of the forestry sector across Southern Africa. To achieve this successfully the department has incorporated some significant short courses in partnership with forestry companies such as Merensky, Hasquarvna and Mesonite. These partnerships are strategic aiming to strengthen the knowledge base attained by students prior to the completion of their studies with Fort Cox College. THE DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY The Fort Cox Forestry Department has staff members with wide range of forestry knowledge and skills. As a result, this allows the Department an opportunity to offer education and training that enhances the competitiveness of the graduates in the industry. Additionally, the Department manages the Nursery for both practical training of the students and also for the College income generation. As part of learning the students are given an opportunity to produce seedlings together with the nursery staff following the necessary steps in the production of seedlings. FORESTRY STUDENTS The Department has launched the Fort Cox Forestry Students Association in November Subsequent to the launch of the FCFSA an application for membership to the International Forestry Students Association was sent. FCFSA is now officially part of the regional and international student associations. This simply means that all applicants admitted to study forestry at Fort Cox College automatically become members of the FCFSA. The main objective is of this association is to engage forestry students in activities that will build their career and also to expose them to other association members regionally and internationally through attending of conferences and symposium. In this regard, the forestry students are then afforded an opportunity to discuss and engage with thedepartment: in an effort to contribute ideas on how they would envisage the department activities to be run and I or managed concerning students matters through FCFSA. EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES On exit level, the student should have the following competences: Understand and convey the roles of exotic and indigenous trees and forests in a variety of land use systems. Understand the basic principles of natural resource ecology, conservation and sustainability for development forestry. Have an understanding of indigenous methods and approaches to the utilization of natural resources associated with development forestry. 8

9 Understand basic information collection, administration, management skills and development economics. Demonstrate an understanding of development theory, land use planning and forestry policy legislation. Understand and apply harvesting systems and value added processes in relation to timber and non-timber to forest products sustainable development.
