RESULTS FROM QUESTIONNAIRE Daniela Benediková

Background Questionnaire contain 9 sectors: National organization of Prunus genetic resources Status and composition of the Prunus collection in country Evaluation / characterization Use of genetic resources Contribution to EPDB (European Prunus Database) Priorities for coming years Gene bank management Safety-duplication Documentation

1 National organization of Prunus genetic resources -Deputies of member s countries, to identify all the institutes, where are in your country and have the responsibility for the preservation of Prunus collections -To indicate if the collections are included in a National Programme for PGR if existing at the country or not -To identify if the activities are coordinated and financially supported by public funding - To indicate if the accessions conserved could be integrated in a European Prunus collection

1. Results : - answered 15 countries - 52 European institutions: 20 private, 30 public, 2 NGO - 3 countries do not send information (Pol, CZ, UK) - Some countries only started with Prunus coll. -10 countries have collections totally included in a National Programme - 3 countries have partly collection included - 2 countries (RO, RS Serbia, Bosnia and dh Herzeg. have not included collection into National program.

2 Status and composition of the Prunus collections in Country Participants send information regarding: -list the Prunus species - number of total accessions /species in country -quantify number accessions of National origin. i

5 Contribution to EPDB (European Prunus Database) enrichment Participants to indicate how many accessions from your country are already included in the EPDB, if not, which problems are preventing you from doing it.

Results: Were obtained result only from 5 countries where have included accessions into EPDB. Ido not know, hove to put it, but I thinks, that countries they have not good connection on the EPDB or be afraid this databases. At the discussion we can discussed about it.

6 Priorities for coming gy years What are the main priorities within Prunus for the coming years, which species and which activities.

Table 6: Priorities for coming years Priority Rank (0 3) Species AL AP CH CH PN EP JP OT S Collection Characterization Breeding Valorizing g( (Initiatives to increase the use of genetic resources or awareness of their importance) Other Rank:0=no priority 1=low priority; 2=medium priority; 3=high priority

Results from Questionnaire: Rank of priorities was in dependence on the utilization and importance of Prunus species at the country. 0-3 points

7. Gene bank management Deputies of countries: give at this section short description of the criteria followed for conservation of Prunus accessions, In vivo (protocol: trees/accession,... ) In vitro (protocols; regeneration frequency,)

7. Gene bank management Results: - All countries have in vivo Prunus collections trees graftedonthespecific rootstocks - Trees are visually and regularly checked for the most important diseases (PPV, fireblight, Monilia, Gnomonia ) In vitro conservation Italy Cryo conservation Italy and Finland, France CRYOVEG project,

At France the National collection is managed in two ways: along-term bank, used as the active gene bank for the distribution of material, and a safety bank holding the duplicates. For safety and sanitary reasons France 1-2 tree/accession maintained under an insect-proof greenhouse. The trees planted in adense orchard, 1or 2 trees are maintained. i According to the Prunus charter, the trees are regenerated as clones every 10 to 15 years.

8 Safety- duplication -Is safety duplication arranged, if yes for what % of collections and if location is the same or not; If not arranged: what are the problems?

8 Safety- duplication Results: All countries besides (R. Serbia Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia) Different level of duplicates 0% Rep. Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia 30 % Italy, Slovakia %Romania, Turkey, Latvia Save duplication maintained by another member of the National program other location of conservation sites (Slovakia) different regions of country (France)

The main problems of Prunus accessions: healthy status of Prunus: PPV, eradication lack of money for plant and staff not funding of activities from national budget or degreasing of budget very old field regeneration collections, need urgent missing money on the identification, collection, introduction, evaluation and regeneration

9. Documentation To indicate the documentation status of the accessions conserved in your country:
