2 Free Legality Training Workshops in China Learn About Recent Changes in the US and EU Market for Forest Products As the Lacey Act is fully enforced starting since 2008, a growing number of US-based forest products importers have already began to seek assurances from their suppliers that the products they source overseas have been legally produced. Meaning that the timber has been harvested, possessed, transported, sold or exported without breaking any relevant underlying laws in the country where the tree was grown, even if it was processed in another country. Meanwhile, the European parliament and the Council of the European Union also published a regulation on laying down the obligations of operators who place timber and timber products on the EU market. This regulation named Due diligence was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 12 November 2010 and will enter into force on 3 March More and more EU timber and timber products importers will require the timber embedded in the imported products should be legally sourced. With funding and support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and European Union, following the first round of training workshops held in China last September on Lacey Act and the legality of timber, the second round series training workshops on the legality of timber are going to be held again. WWF's Global Forest & Trade Network, TRAFFIC, China Timber and Wood Products Association and China Wood International Inc. invite you to attend these workshops to learn more about the Lacey Act and EU Timber Regulations and how you can help your customers comply with them. The Workshop Will Include: Background on the Lacey Act and EU diligence What US and EU importers need from your business What your business can do to help your customers The laws that apply in your country and how to show you comply Access to organizations and information that can help your business trade responsibly Briefing materials to take away to inform your own staff This workshop is a must for all companies exporting forest products to the US and EU market and it is FREE to attend. The new law is an amendment to a 100- year-old statute, named the Lacey Act after the Congressman who first championed it. While the Lacey Act has long been one of the most powerful tools for the US agencies fighting wildlife crime, its potential to combat illegal logging remained untapped to date. Now the Lacey Act sets a groundbreaking precedent for the global trade in plants and plant products, acknowledging and supporting other countries efforts to govern their own natural resources and putting in place powerful incentives for companies trading in these commodities to do the same.

6 About Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN) The Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN) is WWF s initiative to eliminate illegal logging and drive improvements in forest management while transforming the global marketplace into a force for saving the world s valuable and threatened forests. First established in 1991, it is the world s longest-running and largest forest and trade program of its kind providing assistance to hundreds of companies in many countries. About TRAFFIC TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild plants and animals is not a threat to the conservation of nature. TRAFFIC was established in 1976 and has developed into a global network, research-driven and action-oriented, committed to delivering innovative and practical conservation solutions based on the latest information. TRAFFIC also works in close co-operation with the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). About Responsible Asia Forestry and Trade (RAFT) Responsible Asia Forestry and Trade (RAFT) was a five-year program funded by USAID s Regional Development Mission for Asia (RDMA) designed to influence the development and implementation of the public policies and corporate practices needed to improve forest management and bring transparency to the timber trade in Asia. RAFT was managed by The Nature Conservancy and implemented in partnership with IUCN, RECOFTC The Center for People and Forests, The Forest Trust (TFT), the Tropical Forest Foundation (TFF), TRAFFIC and WWF s Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN). In addition to these key implementing partners, RAFT worked with government, industry, NGOs and academic institutions from across the globe.
