1 MOVING for MONARCHS Monarch Move Submission Information Move with Us! Welcome, Monarch Movers! We re thrilled that you ve decided to move with us to support monarch butterflies and pollinator conservation! In order to participate and have YOUR VIDEO uploaded to our YouTube channel and YOUR MONARCH MOVE considered for inclusion in the Dance of Life choreography that Moving for Monarchs is developing, please follow the below instructions for submission and consider these helpful recommendations. Happy moving! The M4M Team Instructions and Recommendations for Creating a Monarch Move and Submission: 1) Observe a monarch butterfly (in person, or go online to find pictures/film clips of a monarch) as it inches along as a caterpillar, emerges from its chrysalis, flies, or sips nectar. Or, just imagine how a butterfly moves trust yourself! You can also think about what a butterfly symbolizes to you: Grace? Strength? Happiness? Freedom? How do YOU move when you re feeling any of these things? 2) With the help of observation and/or your own original ideas of what it means to be a butterfly, create a gesture, dance move, or short movement phrase that reflects a monarch butterfly and celebrates the dance of life (the process of pollination)! 3) Film your unique Monarch Move on your mobile device or camera and send it to us! (For details on length of submission, see the FAQ section below.) 4) Remember, there is no right or wrong way for a Monarch Move to look!

2 FAQ: What is a Monarch Move? (It s You + Monarch Butterfly = your unique gesture or Monarch Move!) - A Monarch Move is a gesture, dance move, or short movement phrase that is inspired in some way by the magnificent creature known as the monarch butterfly. The possibilities are really endless Who can submit? (Anyone, anywhere, ANY AGE and ABILITY LEVEL welcome!) - We welcome movers of ALL AGES and ABILITY LEVELS to join the dance; if you ve ever seen a monarch butterfly, or if haven t yet but you d like to one day, we hope you will contribute your move to our growing Monarch Move video library! - Monarch Moves can be submitted by anyone, anywhere in the world. If you are interested in making a positive difference in the fate of the North American monarch butterfly and the planet s other pollinating species a fate human beings also share then you have come to the right place! - Since monarchs migrate from Mexico, through the U.S., to Canada and back again each year, we hope to receive submissions from monarch movers who live along their migratory path as well as submissions from butterfly enthusiasts around the world. (See a map of their migration here.) What styles of dance are included? (All styles welcome!) - All styles! Dance styles can range from ballet to hip-hop to tap to your very own style of dancing! All levels of dance experience and ability levels (from Never Danced Before/No Dance Training to Beginner to Professional ) are welcomed with equal enthusiasm. NOTE: Please feel free to create move that works for your unique instrument (body); for example, you could even create a move with just your hands or upper body while sitting down in a chair!

3 How long can submissions be? (Recommended seconds but we re flexible!) - Videos should be approximately seconds in length. We welcome videos to be longer if you re feeling inspired, but we can t necessarily guarantee that we will watch more than the first 30 seconds in consideration for incorporation into the Dance of Life. NOTE: Group submissions can be longer, allowing up to 30 seconds per participant--so for a class of 10 students, that s 3 minutes of allotted time; or we can give a family of 5 up to 1.5 minutes of viewing time. What about music? (It s up to you!) - Music is optional, but welcomed if you want to include it! - Things to consider: What music makes you joyful, makes you feel like dancing? Or, what kinds of sounds or songs remind you of monarch butterflies and their incredible journey? Or is silence more effective? It s all up to you! Where should monarch moves be filmed? (Recommended tips!) - On a very practical level, please film in a location that is well-lit so that we can clearly see your mazing moves! - Extra consideration will be given to pieces that are filmed in locations that contain monarch butterfly habitat whether it s a school Monarch Waystation (the Monarch Waystation program is run by Monarch Watch as an initiative for registering habitat) or a field or garden containing milkweed plants. Extra consideration will also be given to pieces that include creative monarch/milkweed costuming pollinator points to pieces that include monarch wings made of recycled materials and other creative additions!
