2 What are the CIVITAS City Networks? CIVINET: A group of national and regional networks that promote the CIVITAS approach at a local level Benefits for members: Peer-to-peer exchange in own language and legal/institutional context Overcomes some of the barriers for local authorities and other organisations interested in learning from CIVITAS experience Added Value for Europe: Encourages wider take-up of sustainable mobility measures and policies Fosters dialogue between cities, the European Union and national governments about transport policy issues, legislation, regulations, and funding

3 Subject Areas Good practice and experience with planning, implementing and evaluating urban transport measures under the 8 CIVITAS subject areas: Clean fuels and vehicles; Collective passenger transport; Demand management strategies; Mobility management; Safety and security; Car-independent lifestyles; Urban freight logistics; Transport telematics. Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans

5 Network Participants Full members: All local authorities within the geographic area covered by the Network that are eligible to participate in CIVITAS. Associate members: Associations, research centres, universities and other organisations (both public and private sector), with an interest in urban transport. 13 Lessons Learned Peer-to-peer exchange is the only way to deeply understand what has been implemented Site visits give added value Enhanced dialogue compared to most conferences is much appreciated Getting access to European innovation news in own language is much welcomed Joining together and speaking with one voice to national and European stakeholders is a key benefit

14 The CIVINET Approach A light touch at EU level emphasis on the national networks A National Network Manager and Secretariat for each network Generic terms of reference BUT Each network is established according to local needs with appropriate links to other national bodies

16 Next Steps Launch of CIVINET Slovenia, October 2012 FP (July 2012 Call for Proposals) ACTIVITY ENSURING SUSTAINABLE URBAN MOBILITY SST Capitalising CIVITAS knowledge and experience Budget will be set aside to establish complementary or maintain existing national/regional networks to promote awareness, ensure results dissemination and take-up following the approach taken in already established CIVINET networks Additional funding may become available to support further expansion

17 Want to join us? If you are interested in establishing a CIVINET network in your country or region, talk to us! You will need a sponsoring city or regional authority (preferably with CIVITAS experience) and probably a consultant to organise the activities You will need to produce a Business Plan showing how you expect the network to function in your country/region, the financial arrangements, and letters of support from other authorities We will help you to get organised and will include you in the family as soon as possible
