2 The Single European Market Performing Between Regulation and Equal Competition Welcome Address 2 Welcome Address of the Minister of Environment Equal competition, high level of consumer protection and ambitious environmental standards are distinguished attributes of the European Single Market. In order to ensure that products comply with the standards defined by law, an organized and preferably extensive surveillance by the authorities is needed. In Baden-Württemberg, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector is the responsible authority for this task. A multitude of rules sets the standards for safety, energy efficiency or the content of pollutants in products. The Market Surveillance Authority ensures that products comply with these standards. This serves to protect the consumer and the environment. In the light of fair competition, it is also important that all market players adhere to the rules. Companies and authorities are faced with the task of constantly staying on top of the highly dynamic developments within the legislative process in Europe. Many regulations are very complex, thus challenging companies to obey them in their entity. I cordially invite you to attend the congress European Single Market Performing between Regulation and Equal Competition and exchange views with actors from government, economy and authorities, also giving you the opportunity to discuss the continued formation of a hands-on legislative process and Market Surveillance. We have compiled a comprehensive program including numerous best-practice examples, especially on current developments in the areas of Ecodesign and TTIP. Franz Untersteller MdL Minister of the Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector, German Federal State of Baden-Württemberg
