2 Traditional Role of the Postal Service The Postal Service has long provided universal service by: Delivering mail to every door, every day. Delivering mail reliably, securely, and at a reasonable cost to customers. Making national communications accessible to all, including in rural areas.

3 Postal Service Outlook Outlook of the Postal Service is unknown at this point, as the roles and responsibilities of the Postal Service are currently being debated by Congress. Long-term future of the Postal Service will be dependent on how effectively it can INNOVATE and incorporate printed technologies and reinvent itself to meet the needs of the ever-evolving digital age.

4 Financial State of the U.S. Postal Service Financial state: Fiscal Year 2011: Loss of $5.1 Billion Fiscal Year 2012 Anticipated Loss : $14 Billion Quarter 2 of Fiscal Year 2012: $3.2 Billion loss Bottom line- PS is losing $25m a DAY but has overfunded their Pension fund by $13.1B and has pre-funded about 50% of their RHBP ($44B). They fund at a higher percentage than others in gov t (0%), military (35%) and private sector (37%). Significant costs: 80% of costs are labor-related Shed over 200,000 employees in last decade (557k employees at beginning of FY 2012 Proposes eliminating another 155,000 jobs by 2016

5 Sustainability The Mission is simple to be a sustainability leader. The Postal Service is committed to actions that promote sustainability-meeting the needs of the present without compromising the future. It is working to create a culture of conservation among its more than 546,000 employees in its 32,000 facilities.

6 USPS SUSTAINABILITY GOALS Reduce Facility Energy 30 percent by FY 2015 Reduce Vehicle Petroleum use 20 percent by FY 2015 Increase the use of alternative fuel 10 percent a year with goal to double alt. fuel usage by FY2015 Reduce waste sent to landfills 50 percent by FY2015 Reduce water use by 10 percent by FY2015 Reduce Spending on consumables 30 percent by FY 2020

12 ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ONGOING EFFORTS In 2009 the Postal Service became the first federal agency to report on its Green House Gas emissions. The Postal Service is the only federal agency to respond corporate-wide to the federal green challenge, a national campaign to reduce the governments impact on the environment. As part of its culture of conservation, in FY 2011, the postal service reduced its carbon footprint by approximately 985,000 metric tons and was the first government agency to win the climate Registry Gold Status award for having lowered it green house gas emissions by 7.4%.

13 AWARDS The Postal Service is an environmental leader and has been honored with more that 75 awards including: 40 White House Closing the Circle Awards for environmental stewardship 10 WasteWise Partner of the year awards from The Environmental Protection Agency for best government performance. FY 2009 USPS received the Climate Action Champion award and the Postal Technology International Environmental Achievement of the year award
