1 Create A City-State to Rule Them All! A city-state is a republic which means that it is controlled by people who were elected, not a king or queen. In Italy city states were becoming very powerful because they were able to control trade. Italian City-States became powerful trading cities because of their; Geography, Climate, Leadership and Social Organization. The Objective The purpose of this project is to enable students to think critically and creatively about the characteristics that enabled the Italian city-state to become dominant trading empires in Europe. To demonstrate their understanding of these characteristics students will work in groups of three and will be given three in class periods to following tasks. Your Task(s) In groups of three your job is to develop and define the characteristics of a city-state empire that would emerge as the most dominant trading empire in a region. *******Read the following guidelines carefully to understand how to develop your city state and how you will be evaluated. ******* Getting Stared! Guidelines for selecting the location and name of your city-state. o You are able to choose any nation in the world, to be your city state You can choose to use its actual name or come up with a fictitious name as a group. Another helpful hint is to make reference to where your nation would be in modern times if you are creating a unique name for your nation. o When choosing your nations geographic features, natural resources, and climate it DOES NOT have to be based on the actual characteristics available in that area of the world. You can decide on these features as a group to develop the most successful trading empire possible. o The time period that we are considering is around s. Therefore, things such as modern electronics would not be available. Nevertheless, you are welcome to research and find technological advancements which are relevant to this time period to use to them to your advantage. Dividing the Project Responsibilities, Accountability, and Assessment Divide the THREE TASKS between your three group members. Each group member will complete ONE of the tasks listed below. Each task includes a visual component worth 5 marks and a written component worth (5 marks) totaling 10 marks for each task. The entire project is worth a total of 30 marks. Please be sure to follow the guidelines and rubrics associated with each task as the requirements are specific and the writing tips will ensure you understand and complete everything!

Defines where in the world your city-state would be located, its geographic features and the natural resources available in that area. (Ex. Mountains, Lakes, Rivers, Oceans, Gold, oil, farming; crops and or cattle, fish, lumber, precious stones, access to water etc.) Should HAVE A LEGEND which includes a MINIMUM OF THREE PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES AND THREE NATURAL RESOURCES. 2. The climate of your city-state is defined by its kinds of weather, length of seasons, and amount of precipitation ultimately defining the kinds of crops that would grow there. 3. A paragraph(s) that describes how and why these characteristics would help to make your city state a dominant trading empire in the region. Your paragraph(s) should be a MINIMUM OF TEN sentences a MINIMUM OF THREE PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES AND THREE NATURAL RESOURCES. Leadership - Characteristics of an Effective Leader (10 Marks) Person Responsible: Create an illustration (8.5X11) of your leader and use figurative language to define a MINIMUM OF FIVE effective characteristics that this political leader has. 1. Define the FIVE CHARACTERISTICS of an effective leader that would enable your city-state to become a dominant trading empire. (Ex. Good listener, democratic, ruthless, economically driven, brutal, kind, compassionate.) 2. Is the leader democratically elected or was their position hereditary, meaning determined by birth? (ie. King or Queen) Why would this make him of her an effective leader? 3. Write a paragraph(s) that describes why these characteristics would help to make your city state one of the most dominant trading empires in the region. Your paragraph(s) should be a MINIMUM OF TEN sentences. Social Structure Flag (10 Marks) Person Responsible: Create a flag that visually represents how the society in your city-state is structured and how this social organization would help your city-state to become a dominant trading empire. Answer the following questions to help develop a visual representation for your flag and use these responses as a basis for your paragraph: 1. Is your society structured more like feudalism which doesn t let people move between classes and power is based on land ownership or is it similar to when the middle class was established and power was based on money and there was social mobility? 2. Are leaders elected or is hereditary meaning defined by birth (like a king or queen) How would this impact the people? 3. What jobs do people value and why are these jobs valued? 4. Are people treated fair or is there special treatment for certain people? 5.
