2 the creation of a network of specialists Our story In 1980 a French association headed by Yannick Pavec organised a conference in Vienna with speakers from at least six other European countries and it proved a great success. Sir Kenneth Cork, who had just completed his term in office as Lord Mayor of London, organised a meeting in London the following year. He also arranged for the incorporation of L Association Européenne des Practiciens des Procédures Collectives (AEPPC) in France and formed the first Council with many of those who had been in Vienna. In 1982 the British practitioners celebrated the 21st birthday of their Association, the IPA, with a conference in Cape Cod, USA, inviting North American practitioners and as a result, Richard Turton (UK) and Ian Strang (Canada) founded INSOL International. AEPPC joined INSOL International in 1984 as a member association. Developments in France in the late 1990s made AEPPC an antiquated term and the name of the organisation was changed at the Paris Council Meeting in April The new name was debated and INSOL Europe was voted in. Since then INSOL Europe has undergone great changes with a combination of globalisation, the development of the insolvency professions in both Western and Eastern Europe, the continually increasing emphasis on effective reorganisation of ailing businesses, and the development of global models such as the European Insolvency Regulation and the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross Border Insolvency. INSOL Europe has risen to these challenges and continues to grow and thrive. We look forward to welcoming you as a member. 2

3 The goals and strategies of INSOL Europe are to: lead the study and evaluation of insolvency, business recovery law and practice in Europe; disseminate technical and topical information on insolvency and business recovery matters; publish a quarterly journal, eurofenix, for members; maintain the INSOL Europe website for members and others; hold international and regional congresses throughout Europe; facilitate networking between members and exchange of professional experience; discuss and negotiate with relevant officials of European national and international bodies with regard to any matter which may concern members; make submissions and contribute to the work of European and other International official bodies who are affected by the insolvency process, or who have a role to play in the saving of businesses and jobs; co-operate with INSOL International and its member organisations and other international associations in connection with any insolvency study or project; and assist in the education and training of members, their team and others. 3

4 we now have the largest and the most multidisciplinary membership ever Our members INSOL Europe has over 1,200 members consisting of qualified lawyers, accountants and insolvency practitioners together with lenders, regulators, members of the judiciary, credit managers, credit insurers and students studying the insolvency discipline. INSOL Europe is a member of INSOL International ( the global insolvency and turnaround association with over 9,000 members. Eurofenix INSOL Europe publishes its journal, eurofenix, four times a year, in English and French. It features current events concerning the profession in Europe; news and book reviews; high quality technical articles written by leading practitioners and academics; news concerning law reform throughout Europe; the efforts that jurisdictions are making to update their insolvency legislation and practice; and issues related to the European Insolvency Regulation and jurisprudence. Case Register The European Insolvency Regulation Case Register website (visit which now redirects you to the service hosted by LexisNexis) is a valuable tool designed by INSOL Europe members currently containing over 450 abstracts and judgments, from throughout the EU, that refer to the EC Regulation on Insolvency Proceedings (No 1346/2000). 4

Our events include: European Congresses Annual Congresses are held throughout Europe. The first was in London in 1981 and since then the venues have been Paris (France), Den Haag (The Netherlands), Lake Como (Italy), Baden Baden (Germany), Marbella (Spain), Dromoland (Ireland), Knokke-Heist (Belgium), St Helier (Jersey), Vilamoura (Portugal), Nice (France), Prague (Czech Republic), Stratford upon Avon (UK), Telfs (Austria), Florence (Italy), Budapest (Hungary), Toledo (Spain), Oslo (Norway), Munich (Germany), Paris (France), Rome (Italy), Malta, Cork (Ireland), Prague (Czech Republic), Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Bucharest (Romania), Monte Carlo (Monaco), Barcelona (Spain), Stockholm (Sweden), Vienna (Austria), Venice (Italy), Brussels (Belgium), Paris (France) and Istanbul (Turkey). The Congresses in 2015, 2016 and 2017 will be held in Berlin (Germany), Lisbon (Portugal) and Warsaw (Poland) respectively. The Congress is the annual flagship event of the Association and the key papers are published on our website. Bi-Annual Academic Forums take place every six months to tackle relevant themes of interest to the practice and academic communities. The Eastern European Countries Committee Conference, which is usually organised once a year in spring, tackles insolvency issues particularly pertinent to Eastern European countries, and also, themes of general interest for all Europe and the world. The Lenders Group Meetings provide a forum for lenders in which they can meet, develop cross-border support and contacts, co-operate and communicate in both formal insolvencies and informal restructurings. The Turnaround Wing s Events are targeted at turnaround professionals and stakeholders operating in the restructuring community across Europe and beyond. 6

7 Governance INSOL Europe is governed by its Articles of Association. Its affairs are administered by a Council which is elected by its members. The Council elects the officers including the President, Deputy President, Vice President and Treasurer. The Executive Committee, which includes the officers and the Director of Administration, represents the Council and is responsible for the day to day management of the Association. 8 to assist in the education and training of members, their staff and others Research and training projects INSOL Europe undertakes a wide range of projects relating to insolvency law and practice within Europe and beyond European borders. INSOL Europe is available to identify speakers on insolvency related topics for meetings and conferences. The Technical Committee will, from time to time, identify and initiate studies into insolvency or turnaround matters of interest, legislation or on comparative subjects. INSOL International INSOL Europe encourages greater international cooperation and communication within Europe, and also with the rest of the world through its membership of INSOL International, the global insolvency and turnaround association with over 10,000 members. Members of INSOL Europe are entitled to the full benefits and services provided by INSOL International, including the right to attend INSOL International conferences and to receive INSOL International s newsletter, INSOL World, and publications. Recent publications include Directors in the Twilight Zone IV, The Avoidance of Antecedent Transactions and Cross-Border Insolvency and INSOL Guide to Islamic Finance. INSOL Europe members have been involved in a range of INSOL International s activities and have served on INSOL International s Board of Directors. 8

9 INSOL Europe is prepared to give evidence to Governments or Governmental bodies upon request, in regard to members experience with the law and practice in their own countries, in general or concerning foreign or cross-border matters. INSOL Europe members have participated in the United Nations Commission for International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Groups on Cross Border Insolvency Law and the Insolvency Legislative Guide. 9
