1 news Newsletter n. 2 August 2018 news CALRE Dear Readers, It is with great satisfaction that I introduce the new image of CALRE s Newsletter, a privileged channel for disseminating the activity developed by this Conference during the year and also for sharing the activities held by its member Assemblies and Parliaments, wherefore I reiterate the invitation to its diffusion. Follow us: calrenet Besides the news sent by CALRE s members, you will find in this edition information on the second Standing Committee meeting, on the third edition of CALRE Award, as well as on the commemorative activities on Europe Day, World Environment Day, World Refugee Day and on the 30th anniversary of Cohesion Policy. Finally, I want to underline that registrations for CALRE s workshop, Regional Legislative Parliaments: what role in EU s Cohesion Policy beyond 2020?, within the scope of the European Week for Regions and Cities, are open, as well as registrations for the Plenary Assembly, to be held in November, on Faial Island, Azores. 2 CALRE President of the Parliament of Madeira attends the Plenary Assembly of the European Committee of the Regions José Lino Tranquada Gomes, President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, attended the Plenary Assembly of the European Committee of the Regions, which took place in Brussels, on 4 July, on behalf of CALRE. CALRE S II Standing Committee Meeting meets in Brussels CALRE s Standing Committee meeting was held last 28 June, at the Committee of the Regions, in Brussels, in which the reflection on the future of CALRE, one of the main pillars of the Working Programme for this year, was highlighted with the presentation of the documents that summarise the suggestions and contributions of the several CALRE s Parliaments on this important subject. Statement of the President of CALRE on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the EU s Cohesion Policy The European Union celebrates, today, the 30th anniversary of the Cohesion Policy establishment, a date that should precisely be mentioned in all the European regions, not only remembering its decisive contribution to the regional development and the differences decrease between the several European territories, but also highlighting the enormous challenges that are placed... Statement of the President of CALRE on the occasion of the World Refugee Day On the day we celebrate the World Refugee Day, established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2000, we remember the courage and strength, but also the suffering and despair of millions of refugees throughout the world.

3 CALRE CALRE celebrates World Environment Day The Conference of European Regional Legislative Assemblies (CALRE) celebrated World Environment Day with an initiative launched to its Assemblies and Parliaments and which consisted of planting a tree or plant in the gardens of their buildings with a plate of CALRE or other environmental initiative they found relevant and more suitable to each region. Vice-President of the Bavarian State Parliament attends the Hearing of the Task Force on Subsidiarity at the European Committee of the Regions The Vice-President of the Bavarian State Parliament, Reinhold Bocklet, attended the hearing to support the work of the Task Force on Subsidiarity, Proportionality and Doing Less More Efficiently, hosted by the European Committe of the Regions last 28 May, on behalf of CALRE. President of the Regional Assembly of Murcia attends the XXII Conference of UNALE The President of the Regional Assembly of Murcia, Rosa Peñalver, represented in Brazil the 74 regional parliaments of Europe in the Conference of Legislative States. CALRE celebrates Europe Day The Conference of European Regional Legislative Assemblies (CALRE) celebrated Europe Day with an initiative launched to its Assemblies and Parliaments and which consisted of illuminating the façade of their buildings with blue colour or projecting the European Union flag.

4 WG working groups CALRE Working Group on Depopulation and Ageing has launched its own website in order to promote a Forum for exchange of best practices on Depopulation and Ageing Take part on its Awards Against Depopulation and Ageing! CALRE Working Group on Depopulation and Ageing chaired by Silvia Clemente will award best ideas to fight against Depopulation and Ageing The Coordinator of the CALRE Working Group on Depopulation and Ageing and President of Cortes de Castilla y León has announced the launch of the Working Group Forum aimed at sharing the best ideias. Furthermore, this Working Group is draftung a position paper addressed to cope depopulation... CALRE Working Group on Subsidiarity meets in Brussels Coordinator of the CALRE Working Group on Subsidiarity, First Vice President of Bavarian State Parliament Reinhold Bocklet and members of the group discussed with Prof. Dr. Christian Calliess EU-Commission`s Task Force on Subsidiarity and with Prof. Dr. Klemens H. 5 Project "Small Citizens on the Island" displayed at the Azorean Parliament The project "Small Citizens on the Island" was an initiative of the Pre-School Department of Escola Básica e Integrada (EBI) da Horta (group of Horta s elementary schools), and its main objective was education for citizenship and training responsible, independent and supportive children through activities specially created for this purpose. The Parliament of Andalusia celebrates the declaration of the Caliphate City of Medina Azahara as a UNESCO World Heritage The President of the Parliament of Andalusia, Juan Pablo Durán, moved his congratulations and that of the Andalusian Parliament to all Cordovans and Andalusians after the declaration of the Caliphate City of Medina Azahara as a UNESCO World Heritage, in a verdict made public on July 1. 6 The Parliament of the Canary Islands opens collaboration lines with the United Nations Development Program The President, Carolina Darias, presented in Brussels the project for a Canarian strategy of sustainable development launched by the chamber. Students António José de Ávila Elementary School exhibit at the Azorean Parliament The exhibition Da imagem nasce uma história ( From the image a history is born ) by students the 6th grade of António José de Ávila Elementary School, Horta, was displayed at the Azorean Parliament premises. The exhibition was made up of work performed in Visual and Technological Education and Portuguese classes during the school year of 2017/2018. 11 AGENDA & AWARDS CALRE Award 2018 CALRE s Standing Committee evaluated, last 28 June, during its second meeting, in Brussels, the ten applications six parliaments for the third edition of CALRE s Award Stars of Europe, whose main objective is to bring out best practices and initiatives adopted by CALRE s European Regional Assemblies. The following initiatives received the highest number of votes: I Regional School Discussion Competition, Parliament of Canary Islands, and Citizen Participation Project, Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation/ French-speaking Community, first place, Castilla y León, Land to Welcome, Parliament of Castilla y Léon, and Work Methodology for the Realization of the Mixed Movements of Populations and Human Rights Report, Parliament of the Canary Islands, second and third places, respectively. The prizes will be awarded at CALRE s Plenary Assembly, which will be held on 21 and 22 November, on Faial Island.
