2 After the Reformation Catholics and Protestants (aka-huguenots) are fighting They arrange a marriage to stop the fighting Catherine de Medici convinces her son (brother of the bride) to kill some people so the Huguenots will leave He orders it done, it fails, Catholics are scared the Huguenots will retaliate Catholics kill 20,000 Huguenots in one month to prevent it. Groom has to become Catholic or he dies.

3 France s king dies no heirs Asks Henry IV (the Protestant one) to be king He agrees has to become formally Catholic Writes an edict to give Protestants the same rights as Catholics 12yrs later he s assassinated What Next?

5 Absolute Monarch All-powerful king aka- no advisors Louis XIV- 4yrs old assumes power at 22 Divine right= king s power comes from God and he s responsible only to God Made it illegal to be Protestant in France

15 What s going on in England? Lots of queens Mary aka Bloody Mary (Catholic) Elizabeth I (Church of England) Fight the Spanish Armada (navy) Parliament- an elected group of representatives

20 Protectorate Oliver Cromwell Military leader who wins the war against King Charles Later, things in Parliament didn t go his way He took over and made a new government Lord Protector People hate him just as much as Charles Ruled like a military dictator No gambling No horse racing No dancing No fancy clothes No going to the theater

22 Parliament s Bill of Rights 1) Monarch can only appoint officers Parliament approves by a majority 2) Monarch can t keep an army during peace/can t suspend laws without Parliament 3) Parliament has to hold regular meetings 4) A Catholic can t become king of England Constitutional Monarchy= the monarch s power is limited by law
