2 What is a Government? A Government is an organized system that makes laws and decisions for the good of the country.» If you compare all the types of governments in the world, you will find one thing in common: Someone is in charge.» How they take charge and the amount of control they have to make decisions for the people can differ depending on the type of government. ex. Some Governments have one leader who has all control. Others give power to the citizens of that country or a group of representatives of the people.

5 Type of Government: Monarchy Definition: A monarchy is when one king or queen rules a country. The right to rule is inherited. (passed down within the family). Leader s relationship with citizens: Citizens do not vote or choose their leader. Some monarchies have complete control, or absolute authority. In others, monarchs share power with elected branches of government.

6 Type of Government: Monarchy Countries that follow this form of government: Today, England still has a monarch, but the authority is limited. In addition, England has a democracy with elected leaders who run the country. Other examples: Saudi Arabia and Spain Other important information: The word monarch means rule by one. Another name for a monarchy is a dynasty. There are three types of monarchies: Absolute, Constitutional, and Parliamentary. Absolute - Saudi Arabia (King Salman) Constitutional - United Kingdom (Queen Elizabeth II) Parliamentary - Spain (Felipe VI & the Council of Ministers)

7 Type of Government: Theocracy Definition: A theocracy is a type of government that views a God as the ultimate authority. Leader s relationship with citizens: In some theocracies citizens can vote; but citizen participation is limited. Religious laws (from a holy book) are also the laws of the country. Religious leaders are also the leaders of the country.

8 Type of Government: Theocracy Countries that follow this form of government: Afghanistan Iran- theocratic republic (a mix between a theocracy and democracy) Other important information: Theo - greek word meaning, god. Many ancient governments began as Theocracies- example: Roman Empire

9 Type of Government: Dictatorship Definition: A dictatorship is a form of government where one leader has absolute control over citizens lives. Leader s relationship with citizens: Citizens have no rights and risk punishment if they criticize government leaders. Citizens do not vote for/ elect their next leader. Power is often obtained through force.

10 Type of Government: Dictatorship Countries that follow this form of government: Cuba North Korea Sudan Egypt Other important information: Many ancient governments were dictatorships.

11 Type of Government: Democracy Definition: A democracy is a governing system in which the citizens participate. People are the source of authority for the government. Leader s relationship with citizens: People vote for/ elect their leader. People have civil liberties (freedom of speech, religion, fair trial). Government Power is limited and shared with other representatives of the people.

12 Type of Government: Democracy Countries that follow this form of government: United States Canada Mexico Italy Other important information: Most countries today have a democratic government.

Dictatorship/ Monarchy/ Theocracy/ Democracy Ancient Egyptian government has some qualities from each type of government.» Dictatorship: Rule was usually obtained through force. No voting.» Monarchy: A pharaoh was from a dynasty which passed on leadership to members of the same family.» Theocracy: religion at this time was polytheistic and pharaoh was thought represent a god.» Democracy: Viziers were people of the kingdom that worked to help pharaoh make decisions. There were some laws that protected citizens.
