2 SAMED - One voice for the South African Medical Device Industry SAMED is the voice of the Medical Device Industry in South Africa. Established in 1985, the association has grown significantly in recent years and is now recognised as an important player in the South African healthcare industry. SAMED represents the interests of 160+ medical device, medical equipment and In Vitro Diagnostics Companies in South Africa. SAMED VISION To develop a sustainable medical device industry by responsibly improving patient access to innovative health technology. SAMED is committed to safeguarding and promoting the interests of its members, encouraging ethical principles and practices, promoting innovation and better patient outcomes and ensuring effective representation with all relevant authorities whether public or private. SAMED OBJECTIVES Ensure that all activities of SAMED shall have the best interests of its members as the primary objective, within applicable legal frameworks and provided that such shall not unreasonably diminish from the needs and rights of patients; Provide a forum for discussion on matters affecting the manufacturers, importers and distributors of medical devices in South Africa, provided that such discussions are permitted by South African competition law; Promote and encourage among its members ethical principles and practices, and to this end, publish, update and/or participate in any Code or Codes of Practice which shall be binding on all members; Communicate and represent, through elected, appointed or designated persons and/or structures, the medical device industry's standpoint on relevant matters and offer advice or make recommendations, within the confines of competition law, when the need arises to anybody or institution whose decisions and policies might affect the industry; Engage with governments and regulatory authorities, whether national or international, through its officials and structures, where appropriate; Work towards harmonization of standards and regulatory requirements relating to medical devices; and Promote a spirit of co-operation and shared responsibility among role-players in the public and private health care sectors, within the context of achieving effective, efficient and transparent health care delivery. THE DEVELOPMENT AND USAGE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY HAS RESULTED IN SAFER AND IMPROVED DELIVERY OF CARE OVER THE PAST DECADES.

3 SAMED MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS SAMED aims to promote and market the value of the Medical Device Industry, providing members with regular and relevant information about developments in the local and international medical devices arena. SAMED engages key stakeholders, advocates for members interests and continually works towards benchmarking professional conduct for its members. Upon membership, medical device companies automatically become part of a larger organisation that has the expertise and commitment to advocate for and protect the rights of its members. SAMED s strategy is well documented and its resources, including board members and committee members, understand the challenges presented by the industry and the environment. SAMED members are by virtue of their membership part of a reputable, proven organisation. SAMED members enjoy regular, industry-related information gathered from numerous sources, including government and private sector SAMED members have access to advice and support regarding the regulation of devices, both abroad and locally SAMED members have access to regular networking sessions, enabling members to connect with other individuals and businesses and benefit from opportunities SAMED members have access to contacts across government healthcare departments, tender boards, private sector health care groups and health care professional societies SAMED members benefit from incoming product and tender enquiries (local and overseas), information requests and trade delegation requests SAMED has an association with other international agencies, including AHWP (The Asian Harmonisation Working Party), GMTA (Global Medical Technology Alliance), Advamed and Eucomed

4 BOARD OF DIRECTORS SAMED s board of directors includes a broad selection of industry leaders. Board members regularly convene in the interests of the industry, with a key focus on building the credibility of the sector for all members and stakeholders. SAMED COMMITTEES SAMED members are encouraged to participate in the various committees. 1. Transformation Committee This committee aims to enhance business sustainability by increasing participation of people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds in the medical device industry. 2. Government Supply Process Committee This committee works towards partnering with Government in order to overcome the current shortcomings of the supply chain management (tender) system, outstanding payments and also ensures the reporting of contraventions of current legislation pertaining to Government Supply Chain processes and legislation. 3. Regulatory Committee This committee focuses on influencing the creation of an effective legislative environment for the medical devices industry. 4. Reimbursement, HTA & HE Committee This committee focuses on influencing the reimbursement and health technology assessment of medical devices in both the private and public sectors by demonstrating their clinical and economical value. Evolution and communication of industry guidelines pertaining to reimbursement and HTA processes and models, to build alignment, understanding and industry sustainability are key goals. 5. Congresses Committee This committee wishes to collaborate with Doctor Societies in order to optimize the value obtained by Healthcare Professionals; Societies and the medical device industry from congresses. 6. Medical Device Manufacturers Association of South Africa (MDMSA) Management Committee This committee aims to support the growth and sustainability of the local medical device manufacturing industry. CAPITAL AND OPERATIONAL EXPENDITURE BY THE MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY HAS RESULTED IN THE SUPPORT OF A TOTAL OF JOBS. INNOVATIONS IN MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY SAVE, EXTEND AND IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR MILLIONS OF PATIENTS.
