2 Objectives: To understand the class (estate) system in France To know what privileges existed in society and who enjoyed them To see the power, privilege and problems of the French Monarchy before the revolution To see the connection between Enlightenment thought and a dangerously unequal society 2

4 France was an absolute monarchy, and had been for hundreds of years (back to Charlemagne) France s kings and nobles lived in a style and luxury that would dazzle even today s rich The poster-king for this privilege was Louis XIV (the fourteenth), the Sun King - he was out of touch with his subjects and fought many costly wars in Europe. absolute monarchy - a system of government with a king or queen who has all the power (power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely) nobles - the upper classes (first and second estates), they are well off and had privileges, tles and lands 4

5 Louis XIV moved the royal court from Paris to Versailles where a grand palace was built Between the palace, his wars, and the luxuries he took as the right of a king, he left France in severe debt 5

9 What types of power did Louis XIV have? He had absolute power. (Palace, weapons for the army, wealth, servants, citizens, army, clergy, the law which he could change when he liked, strict hierarchy by estates, census, tax collection) Where would the French society fall on our scale of freedom and order during Louis reign? Too much order and most of the population with no freedoms. Who was at the top of the hierarchy? Who was at the bottom? What rules held the king and the government in line? Answerable to no one besides God - 'divine right of kings' 9

10 Change came in the Enlightenment. Galileo Copernicus Scientists like, and Newton questioned the absolute truth of the Bible. Hobbes Locke Philosophers like and in England and, Voltaire, Montesquieu and Rousseau in France questioned the 'divine right of kings.' 10

13 Assignment: The French Monarchy in Crisis L1: Using the information in the text (pg ), make a full page hierarchy diagram in pyramid shape which includes a title, the three estates and the monarchy. Inside each section in the pyramid, briefly describe the population, the privileges, and the limitations on this group of people. L2: Describe what the height and width dimensions on this pyramid tell us about French society? L3: Using some of the terms and concepts we have discussed (equity, hierarchy, order v. Freedom, etc.) explain why French society at this time was in a dangerous situation. 13
