3 Why Wind, Why Canada, Why Now? Wind energy is a Canadian success story. In the past decade, it has moved from the margins to the mainstream to become an important contributor to electricity supply in every Canadian province. Canada s wind energy developments are helping to create a more modern, cost-effective, flexible and environmentally friendly electricity system, at home and abroad. Today, we stand among the world s leaders. Yet we have only begun to scratch the surface of Canada s wind energy potential. Our wind services market remains underdeveloped compared to the expansive wind services infrastructure in the United States. Canada has come so far already. And we re just getting started. Imagine what the wind will bring in the future. 7 th Canada has the world s 7 th LARGEST OPERATING FLEET OF WIND TURBINES (nearly 10,000 MW of installed capacity) 1,275 MW Canada has installed an average of 1,275 MW OF NEW WIND ENERGY ANNUALLY for the past five years 6 th In 2014, Canada was the WORLD S 6 th LARGEST MARKET FOR NEW WIND ENERGY (1,871 MW) 2/3 Two-thirds of Canada s current installed capacity was INSTALLED IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS TOP 10 NEW INSTALLED CAPACITY JANUARY-DECEMBER 2014 Source: GWEC COUNTRY MW % SHARE PR China 23, Germany 5, USA 4, Brazil 2, India 2, Canada 1, United Kingdom 1, Sweden France 1, Turkey Rest of the world 6, Total TOP 10 44, World Total 51, Siemens is very committed to the Canadian market During the conference, we signed two more orders for the Canadian market The CanWEA Annual Conference is a very good avenue to meet our customers. Jacob Nørgaard Andersen, CEO, Wind Power Americas, Siemens; CanWEA 2014 Exhibitor and Diamond Sponsor

4 Canada: An Emerging Wind Energy Superpower PRIMED FOR GROWTH After several successive years of record growth, Canada s wind energy industry is positioned to grow even stronger. As Canadian provinces aim to meet expectations for greenhouse emission reductions while providing affordable energy alternatives in a volatile economy, there is an increasing demand for a more sustainable supply of electricity. We continue to receive regulatory and policy support for clean, renewable, low-cost and low-emission energy: wind. Canada is projected to install an average of 1,500 MW of new wind energy annually in 2015 and 2016 Ontario will release RFPs to create 300 MW of new wind capacity in both 2015 and 2016, with potential for additional wind energy in 2017 Alberta is expected to release a new climate change program in 2015, introducing new targets for GHG emission reduction; these targets will require a renewable source of energy from the electricity sector, and wind is a prime candidate Saskatchewan is expected to release its plan in 2015 that will include an important role for renewable energy Quebec will release a new 10-year energy policy by the end of 2015, which is expected to include a significant role for wind energy British Columbia has indicated that all future power procurement must be for clean energy provided by independent power producers, and that wind energy represents the bulk of the province s low-cost renewable energy opportunities Canada s First Nations and municipal governments are participating in innovative new ownership models for wind energy projects The upcoming federal election is expected to bring climate change and environmental policy to the surface, emphasizing a need for more renewable energy sources 1,500 MW New wind energy annually ONTARIO 600 MW of new wind by end of 2016 QUEBEC will release a new 10-year energy policy by the end of 2015 As a stakeholder relations manager, I ve been able to listen in and sit in on plenary sessions that have huge amounts of information on how to move forward with projects with community involvement, community and First Nation support. Don Lasko, Stakeholder Relations Manager, Leader Resources; CanWEA 2014 Delegate

5 Looking Forward: A Strong Industry Outlook EMERGING OPPORTUNITIES As the demand for wind energy increases, so does the number of new business possibilities that are arising in a range of industry sectors: Canadian installed base estimate by O&M provider type, 1H2014 (7.7GW installed base) Canada s Operations & Maintenance (O&M) market is currently estimated to be worth $265 million in total services revenue, and continues to show significant annual growth New opportunities are emerging to service the nation s O&M market as wind turbines come off original equipment manufacturer (OEM) service agreements: MAKE estimates that 35% of the total Canadian wind fleet was off turbine OEM warranty as of the first half of 2014 Asset owners will seek lower-cost alternatives, such as independent service providers and specialty repair shops for capital repairs of gearboxes, generators and blades Canada s mining sector and remote communities are increasingly turning to wind energy to offset diesel energy use The rapid growth of wind energy in Canada has led to significant innovations and opportunities for storing wind energy before integrating it into the grid Canada continues to explore new markets for clean wind energy in sectors such as transportation and heating, and to pursue opportunities for exporting wind to other jurisdictions PROVINCIAL OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE REVENUE OPPORTUNITY ESTIMATED AT OVER $265 MILLION WTG OEMs 59% In-house 37% ISP 3% Canadian average FSA budget, MW (CAD) Scheduled Maintenance 30% Unscheduled Major Correctives 28% Unscheduled Minor Correctives 23% Other 9% C-BOP 5% E-BOP 5% Source: MAKE Note Analysis does not include smaller projects w/unknown status M British Columbia 1, M Alberta Capacity (MW) Turbine (#) Revenue Potential M Manitoba 2,427 1,405 73M Quebec M Newfoundland and Labrador Source: MAKE M Saskatchewan 3,126 1,651 93M M New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island Ontario
