1 Annual Report Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Energy & Development, Bangalore Progress of training during Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Energy and Development (MGIRED) during the year period from April to March 2014, conducted several training programmes on creating awareness in the areas of renewable energy, energy conservation, rain water harvesting for different categories of participants as described below. 1. a) Training Programme on Renewable Energy for Gram Panchayat Representatives: 21 programmes were organized for Gram Panchayat (GP) Members from 29 districts (Except Bangalore Urban) Districts. 707 Gram Panchayat Representatives comprising, Panchayat Development Officers, Presidents, Vice Presidents, Members and Secretaries participated in these training programme. Topics covered under this training were: i. Role of GP s in implementing Renewable Energy Projects in Rural areas. ii. Environmental Protection. iii. Renewable Energy Sources & Devices. iv. Rain Water Harvesting & Ground Water Recharging v. Bio-fuels vi. Demonstration of Renewable Energy Devices & Rain Water Harvesting Structures. vii. Subsidies and bank loan facilities available to own renewable energy equipments like solar, wind, biogas plants etc. b) Training Programme on Soura Belaku Yojane for Gram Panchayat Representatives: In view of smooth functioning of Solar Street lights in Grama Panchayats funded by RDPR, a special programme was designed for the maintenance of solar street lights by Grama Panchayat for solar street light technicians, officers and elected representatives. 03 programmes were conducted for the staff of Grama Panchayats of Dharwad, Bellary, Gadag, Raichur, Bagalkote, Chikkamgalore, Koppal, Tumkur and Mysore districts who have installed solar street lights. 89 participants attended the programme. The faculties were drawn from KREDL, ENOLAR solar systems, Deepa Solar Systems, Microsun Solary Systems & Adithya Solar Energy Systems who have installed the solar street lights in the respective districts. Programmes for Women: Two off-campus training programmes were organized for Self Help Group (SHG) women in Tumkur District in Coordination with TIDE (Technology Informatics Design Endeavour) Non Governmental Organization at Aralaguppe and Koudligatta villages. 36 SHG women participated in the awareness programme organized at Aralaguppe and 34 SHG Women in Koudligatta respectively. Faculty members and Project Manager along with Project Coordinators from TIDE conducted the programme. Solar demonstration devices like solar lanterns, table lamps along with solar panels, solar cookers, portable smokeless stoves, biofuel seed samplse, oil extracts, and mini oil expellers were exhibited during this programmeme along with self explaining bulletin boards to create awareness among the rural women folk. Following topics were covered. i. Installation of various solar devices both thermal & photovoltaic at domestic level usage. ii. Advantages of kitchen waste biogas plant. iii. Benefits of construction of smokeless stoves to save fuel and avoid in house pollution. iv. Use of bio fuels at house holds level. v. Biofuel as economic activity like biofuel nursery raising, seed collection, oil extraction and bio diesel conversion. vi. Creating clean & green villages by adopting appropriate methods of waste disposal 3. School Children Programme: Twenty Five programmes were organized for 1353 school children from various schools of Bengaluru Dist. Children from Kendriya Vidyalaya, DAV Public School, Vidya Vahini School, Srirama Vidyala, East West Public School, and various Government Schools participated in these programmes. These students were shown documentary films on Environment Protection and Energy Conservation. They were taken around the Energy Park and Exhibition Halls to give them exposure to working of various energy devices. 4. College Students Programme : Fourteen programmes were organized for college students. These students came from various disciplines like Management, Engineering and ITI Colleges. 573 Students visited the campus during up to March These students were briefed about Institute s activities. Lectures were organized on renewable energy sources & device, energy conservation, scarcity of fossil fuels and their impact Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Energy & Development, Bangalore 2

3 on causing environmental pollution. They were taken around Energy Park and Exhibitions Halls to give practical demonstration on various devices like biomass gassifier, bio-fuel unit and kitchen waste biogas plant. They were also told about hygienic and scientific way of waste disposal and importance of separating dry & wet waste. 5. Exhibition Programmes : Two exhibitions were organized by the Institute in association with various Educational Organizations. They are as follows: i. Prayas School Science Exhibition Programme at Presidency School, Nandini Layout on ii. School Science Exhibition Programme at Army Public School, Near Mekhri Circle, on These events show cased various Models & Exhibits concerned to Solar, Energy, Biofuels, Energy Conservations and Smokeless Stoves. These Exhibitions were useful to promote the activities of MGIRED and also as a good media to create awareness on Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation to larger audience like students & public. 6. Training Programmes for Government Officials: Three programme was organized by the RDPR for RDPR officials on Social Audit at MGIRED. Totally 93 Officers attended the training programme. The training programme was of 2 days duration. 7. A special programme to train Rural Youth on Repair & maintenance of Solar Devices: The programme was organized in collaboration with Bharathiya Vikas Trust, Udupi (National Level Trainers on Solar Technician Training recognized by MNRE). Three programmes were organized at Kodagu, Bidar, Yadgir, Chikkamgalore, Hassan & Koppal districts. There was very good response from local youth. 4 8. Akshaya Urja Programme : Our Ex Prime Minister Late Sri. Rajiv Gandhi had a vision to provide electricity to all rural village of India. Since August 20, 2004, the birth day of Sri. Late Rajeev Gandhi is being celebrated as Akshaya Urja Day. MGIRED organized Akshaya Urja Day on 20 th August 2013, with a co-ordination with Presidency School. 41 students of 10 th Class and Institute s staff participated in the programme and planted bio-fuel seedlings of Honge and Neem. Every 2 students planted one tree in the institute campus and got the information of Institute s activities, energy park and uses of renewable energy equipments. 9. State Level Workshop on Energy Conservation in Agriculture A state level workshop on energy conservation in agriculture was organized jointly by Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Energy & Development (MGIRED), Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) & Petroleum Oil Industry Association of Karnataka, on 13 th, November The workshop was inaugurated by Shri. K. Amaranarayan, IAS, Commissioner of Transport & Road Safety, Government of Karnataka. The representatives of VST tillers & tractors made presentation on latest technologies in farm mechanization. 10. Seminar & Workshop attended by the Faculty i. State Level Bankers Meet organized by NABARD on 1 st October 2013 Dr. R.N. Hegde, Senior Faculty, Mahatma Gandhi Institute made a presentation on the activities / training offered by the Institute. Dr. Hegde apprised the Bankers about the Institute s activities and Energy Park highlighting various forms of renewable energy sources and bankers support required to promote the use of renewable energy sources and renewable energy technologies. He invited the participants to visit the Institute and avail the infrastructure facilities to train the bankers in financing solar home lighting systems and solar water heating systems in rural areas. ii. National Seminar on Community Radios for Social Development, challenges and way forward organized by NIRD, Hyderabad on December 2013 Dr. R.N. Hegde, Senior Faculty attended National Seminar on Community Radios for Social Development, challenges and way forward organized by National Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Energy & Development, Bangalore 4

5 Institute of Rural Development, Government of India held at NIRD on 9-10, December 2013 as an invited speaker. He chaired the session on Commnity Radios and Rural Development. He also presented a paper on community Radios for Rural Development covering the subject of Renewable Energy for Rural Development. A total of 27 participants attended the seminoar representing various community radio stations and also academics from Journalism & Communication departments from as many as ten states in India.
