(Established under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 vide Notification No. F.9-19/95-U-3 dated 5 October 1999 of the Government of India) MTECH IN RENEWABLE ENERGY ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT PG DIPLOMA* IN RENEWABLE ENERGY ADVANCED PG DIPLOMA* IN RENEWABLE ENERGY (*DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMMES)

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMMES There is now a growing realization that India has to emerge as an economy driven by knowledge. Given the rapid progress that intellectual enterprises are making worldwide, higher education must benefi t from a continuous accretion of knowledge through research. This is what TERI University is attempting to do through all its programmes, for the benefi t of not only Indian citizens but people from other countries as well who would pass through the portals of this institution. This university offers education supported by rigorous research. Human existence, survival, and development are dependent on the quality and quantity of available natural resources. Human development is dependent on the efficient utilization of resources. This is true even in the case of fossil fuels. Even the slightest imbalance in resource extraction and conservation may lead to disasters, some of which humankind has already witnessed in the form of landslides, fl oods, water depletion, and above all climate change. Energy is vital for improving the quality of human life of every nation. The growing scarcity of conventional fuels and their adverse ecological and environmental impacts have raised global interest in harnessing various renewable energy sources. Renewable Energy Technologies are emerging as the source of sustainable energy, which will be very important for future energy supply strategies of the entire world. Availability of adequate manpower and appropriate resources is crucial for success in these endeavours. Providing renewable energy education at all the required levels in an effi cient and effective manner is a challenging task Bearing this in mind, TERI University offers MTech/PG Diploma programmes in Renewable Energy Engineering and Management for engineers and physicists. Apart from this, it also offers MSc programmes in various streams related to sustainable development, MA (Public Policy and Sustainable Development) and MBA (Infrastructure). These MTech/PG Diploma programmes provide an opportunity to specialize in the fi eld of renewable energy and energy management. TERI University offers courses in a wide range of topics that cover renewable energy, energy effi ciency and renewable energy technology. R K Pachauri Chancellor TERI University

MTECH/PG DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES Renewable Energy Engineering and Management With an increasing energy crisis and global climate change issues, renewable energy has occupied a prominent position in industry and international relations in recent years. This has resulted in an increased demand for specialists and engineers in renewable energy. There are very few institutes in India that offer a structured programme to cover the diverse range of issues to meet this demand. The programmes at TERI University are intended to fi ll this gap and provide the much-needed human resource capacity in renewable energy technology and management. The programmes are designed to train students not only in renewable energy technology and implementation but also in equally important synergetic areas of energy infrastructure, energy economics and energy conversion technologies. The programmes will lead to a specialization in renewable energy engineering and management. Eligibility criteria MTech: A Bachelor s degree in any branch of engineering or MSc in Physics with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 6.75 on a 10 point scale or equivalent or 60% marks in aggregate. PG Diploma: A bachelors degree in Mathematics/Physical Science/Technology or equivalent with minimum cumulative grade point average of 6.0 on a 10 point scale or equivalent as determined by TERI University, wherever letter grades are awarded, or 55% marks in aggregate (of all years/ semesters of the qualifying examinations) wherever marks are awarded. Selection procedure MTech: Admissions will be based on an online test and an interview. Preference will be given to GATE/NET qualifi ed candidates. PG Diploma: Admissions will be based on evaluation of applications. Sponsored candidates Candidates working in the industry/government are encouraged to apply for the programmes. A NOC (no objection certifi cate)/sponsorship letter from the employer will be required at the time of interview. Pedagogical tools The pedagogical tools consist of lectures, tutorials, practicals and industry/field visits for the MTech programme. There will be distance learning modules followed by face-to-face interaction, some lab exposure and industry/field visits for the distance education programme

MTECH (RENEWABLE ENERGY ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT) Programme outline The objective of the MTech (REEM) programme is to prepare the students in theoretical as well as practical knowledge of renewable energy and energy management. The programme is structured to enable them to tackle practical problems of design and development for industrial applications and to pursue academic research. The programme consists of core and elective courses taught during the fi rst, second and third semesters. In the fi nal semester, the student is required to take up a major project either in an industrial establishment or a research/ consultancy organization dealing with renewable energy, as an independent study under the supervision of a faculty member at the TERI University and a professional at the other organization. Semester 1 P Conventional energy infrastructure P Power systems P Thermodynamics and combustion P Energy economics P Heat and mass transfer P Fluid mechanics and turbomachinery P Research methodology Semester 2 P Applied numerical methods P Energy auditing, energy effi ciency and energy conservation P Renewable energy resource characteristics P Renewable Energy conversion technologies 1 P Renewable Energy conversion technologies 2 P Statistics for engineers P Technical writing Semester 3 Core Courses: P Environmental implications of energy use P Project management P Advanced technologies for environmental protection and climate change mitigation

MTECH (RENEWABLE ENERGY ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT) Elective courses P Renewable energy for thermal applications P Issues in grid integration of power from renewable energy sources P Building energy and green buildings P Waste utilization P Rural energy systems P Wind power generation P Solar thermal and solar photovoltaic power generation P Policy and regulatory aspects of renewable power generation P Biofuels Major project In the fi nal semester, students will carry out a structured project in an industry or organization. The major project will be carried out under the joint supervision of a professional/ researcher in the industry and a faculty member at TERI University. The project carries credits and will be assessed and graded. PG DIPLOMA* IN RENEWABLE ENERGY (1 YEAR) ADVANCED PG DIPLOMA* IN RENEWABLE ENERGY (2 YEARS) Programme outline Distance learning programmes are designed to provide postgraduate training in the area of Renewable and Sustainable Energy through distance mode.
