About us Independent nonprofit Serving 1.6 million customers of Portland General Electric, Pacific Power, NW Natural, Cascade Natural Gas and Avista Providing access to affordable energy Generating homegrown, renewable power Building a stronger Oregon and SW Washington

Timeline of Pilots and Measures Pilots delivered by Existing Homes program : Pilot of Nest as a heat pump control : Pilot of smart t-stats in gas heated homes (Nest and Honeywell Lyric) 2015: Developed smart t-stat measures, screening criteria, and qualified product list 2016: Launched full-scale smart t-stat incentive - (Nest and Ecobee) : Pilot of Nest Seasonal Savings 2017: Developed Seasonal Savings measure

Design: Nest Heat Pump Control Pilot Pilot test of advanced heat pump features Response to problems with previous controls Selected past home audit customers 1,900 heat pump homes selected Randomized homes: 1,600 treatment 300 controls CONTROL TREATMENT Utility billing analysis, site data, and surveys used in research 185 t-stats installed in homes at no cost by program staff

Findings: Nest Heat Pump Control Pilot 12% heating savings, 780 kwh / year (± 460) Follow-up analysis showed 600 kwh / year 75% replaced older programmable t-stats 11 t-stats removed due to initial technical issues 89% satisfied with Nest 93% stated t-stat was easy to use 93% said home comfort was the same or better 80% enabled occupancy detection feature Nest worked well as a heat pump control and achieved significant electric savings

Design: Gas Smart T-stat Pilot Tested Nest and Honeywell Lyric t-stats 22,000 gas heated homes selected Randomized homes: 21,000 treatment 1,000 controls CONTROL TREATMENT Utility billing analysis and surveys used in research 1,110 opted-in and qualified for offer Randomized t-stat assignment: 212 installed Nest 171 installed Lyric $200 rebate for verified t-stats

Findings: Gas Smart T-stat Pilot Nest Lyric Heating Savings 6% (34) -5% (-29) Replaced older programmable t-stat 90% 90% Returned / Not Installed 4% 12% Install / Setup Problems 10% 37% Satisfied with t-stat 95% 68% Easy to use 94% 74% Home comfort the same or better 92% 92% Occupancy detection enabled 90% 50% Nest outperformed Lyric across the board and achieved significant gas savings

Design: Nest Seasonal Savings Pilot Tested Nest service during summer and winter Optimization service for existing Nest customers Savings are in addition to t-stat savings Nest t-stats in Energy Trust territory randomly assigned to treatment or control for each season Treatment t-stats screened to require active internet connection and heating/cooling schedule Nest invited treatment customers to opt-in to service via device, app, Nest analyzed t-stat runtime data across groups and reported energy savings for each season

Evaluation: Nest Seasonal Savings Pilot Review Nest s savings analysis methods Check randomization of groups, data cleaning, key assumptions Re-run analysis with de-identified Nest dataset Surveys with customers after each season Satisfaction and experience with service Site address for matching to utility data Utility billing analysis to independently estimate energy savings

Findings: Nest Seasonal Savings Pilot Summer Winter Runtime savings 0.4% 4.7% Energy savings from Gas: 18 therms/15 kwh 4 kwh runtime analysis Electric: 121 kwh Energy savings from billing analysis therms Opt-in rate 80% 78% Overrode some or all settings changes 54% 58% Satisfied with service 64% 75% Home comfort the same or better 67% 66%

Current Energy Trust Incentives Smart t-stat rebate of $50 (online application) Nest/Nest E and Ecobee 3/4 qualify Residential applications Self-install, any heat source Criteria to screen additional t-stats About 9,000 T-stats installed since pilot 85% Nest 85% installed with gas furnaces Heat pump advanced control incentive for $150 Contractor installed with strip heat lockout About 200 T-stats installed as HPAC since pilot Seasonal Savings re-launched December 2017
