6 Carbon Management Plan Target to reduce emissions from University owned buildings and vehicles by 43% by 2020 based on a 2005/2006 baseline Reductions in carbon emissions of 7% have been achieved against the Carbon Management Plan Previous projects: Lighting and heating controls Photovoltaic panels (Law Court and MacLaurin) Awareness campaigns Programme of future projects

7 Current Environmental Infrastructure Projects All new buildings built to BREEAM Excellent Standard Student Forum Insulation of all exposed heating pipework and valves De Havilland LRC Installation of LED lighting and daylight sensors FMM Building Installation of PV panels on roof Wright Building Improvements to radiator temperature controls and water heaters Meridian House Improvements to water heating and air conditioning efficiency Voltage optimisation to two sub-stations LED lighting and automatic controls to the Main Building and a number of Engineering buildings Air handling control to major lecture theatres A continuing programme of Building Management System (BMS) audits, which identified numerous no-cost measures, such as altering plant time settings, which have subsequently been implemented

8 Waste and Resource Management Strategy Adoption of waste hierarchy (prevent, reduce, reuse, recycle, energy, landfill) Increase recycling to 90% by 2020 Achieved 86% in 2014/15 (target was 85%) Target is 87% this year Look out for your recycling rate on the white board at your residences waste compound!

12 Gum Drop Bins The average piece of gum costs 3p to buy, but around 1.50 to clean up! Fifty times the cost of the gum (Local Government Association)

13 Food Hertfordshire The University only sells Fairtrade bananas last year we sold over 23,000 All chicken and beef used in the restaurants is from UK Farms, with the majority of chicken coming from Suffolk 90 miles away All eggs served on campus are free range 48,000 were cooked last year All our fresh bread is baked less than 2 miles from the University, with some using organic wheat milled at Mill Green watermill less than 4 miles away All coffee served in the Forum, restaurants and LRC cafes is Fairtrade. All tea and coffee served to visitors at the University is Fairtrade with over 115,000 cups served to guests of the University throughout the year All muffins, flapjacks and cookies served in the LRC cafes are Fairtrade with over 34,000 eaten last year

14 Travel Plan Encourages sustainable travel alternatives to car, whilst reducing environmental impacts Targets to reduce single occupancy car travel by 2018 : Staff (60%) currently 67%, down from 82% Students (20%) currently 29%, down from 35% Sustainable travel options promoted University works with travel operators and local community

20 Interesting facts If all University computers were turned off overnight, enough energy would be saved to make 1,486,150 photocopies (annually) Turning one photocopier off overnight for a year would save enough energy to make every student a cup of tea (22,926) Last year the University s food waste produces enough electricity annually to boil 1,561 kettles for one hour 20 tonnes of carbon If every staff and student reduced their paper usage by 10%, 32 trees and 13,000 would be saved per year
