BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

I chose biological systems engineering because I wanted to design sustainable solutions for environmental problems. The opportunities and excellent professors provided by the program have given me the confidence and knowledge to succeed in the future. Aaron Akin, biological and agricultural engineering student

PROGRAM OVERVIEW Biological systems engineering integrates engineering fundamentals, mechanics and design principles with biology and chemistry to develop sustainable solutions for biological, agricultural, food and natural resource systems. DEGREE OPTIONS BIOLOGICAL This integration of engineering and advanced biological sciences enables sustainable processing for food, energy and chemicals; efficient use of biological systems to maintain health of a growing population; and development of biomaterials and bioinstrumentation. MACHINERY This application of machine design principles allows graduates to design, test and evaluate machines, machine components, manufacturing and processing equipment, and sensors and controls used in agriculture and off-road industries. ENVIRONMENTAL Master the design and management of systems that impact natural resources such as ecological engineering design; soil and water conservation; irrigation and drainage system design; and management, bioremediation, water quality and air pollution control. KEY ACADEMIC AREAS * MATH AND SCIENCE COURSES Math/Physics Biology/Chemistry ENGINEERING DESIGN/ TECHNICAL COURSES Biological Processes Chemical Processes Mechanics/Design Electronics/Electricity Business Processes Technical Electives *General education electives not included

MAKE AN IMPACT DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF SOCIETY Explore the role of biological systems engineering in ensuring an adequate and safe food supply, protecting the environment, conserving natural resources, advancing human health, and developing biomaterials and processes. Biological systems engineers design and test unmanned aerial vehicles and off-road machinery including robots, sensors and controls for food production systems, and beyond. promote sustainable engineered systems that support global food systems, human health and the environment. discover biological processes, materials and products for sustaining our growing world. pursue advanced or professional degrees for specialized success in biological systems engineering, environmental engineering, off-road applications, medicine, biomedical engineering and related areas.

GET INVOLVED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH Extend your learning experience and hone your criticalthinking skills by engaging in cutting-edge research with faculty and graduate students in areas such as robotics, environmental sustainability, bioprocessing and bio-based materials. CREATIVE INQUIRY DESIGN TEAMS HELWIG FARMS QUARTER-SCALE TRACTOR TEAM Students gain practical experience in the design, building and testing of drive-train systems, tractor performance and manufacturing processes. FOUNTAIN WARS TEAM The fountain wars team applies fundamental principles of hydraulics and fluid flow to design and participate in the annual ASABE competition a hands-on, realtime water fountain design contest based on aesthetic display and completion of technical tasks. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AMERICAN SOCIETY OF AGRICULTURAL AND BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERS (ASABE) ASABE is an international educational and scientific organization dedicated to the advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food and biological systems. BIODIESEL INITIATIVE The biodiesel club is a student-led organization dedicated to research, production and innovation of biodiesel on the K-State campus.

OPPORTUNITIES CAREERS Biological systems engineering students receive a broad engineering education with flexible degree plans that enable a wide range of careers in government agencies, environmental design and consulting firms, biotechnology companies, electric power and utility companies, agriculture and off-road equipment industries, oil and gas facilities, food and feed industries, and health care. Biological systems engineering graduates can pursue careers as biomedical engineers and medical professionals consulting engineers design and test engineers environmental engineers project engineers/managers precision agriculture specialists bioprocess engineers research and development engineers pharmaceutical manufacturing engineers OF K-STATE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING GRADUATES ARE EMPLOYED, OR ENROLLED IN GRADUATE OR PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS WITHIN SIX MONTHS OF GRADUATION. INTERNSHIPS IS THE AVERAGE STARTING SALARY FOR A K-STATE BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS ENGINEERING GRADUATE. Many internship opportunities are available for students to gain industry experience and develop professional relationships. The K-State Career Center, your adviser and faculty in the department will help you connect with employers and find opportunities.
