Students then discover some possible solutions and recognize ways to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. 3rd 6th: Raptors This program focuses on the birds of prey that call Georgia home. Habitats, adaptations, and conservation issues will be discussed. Hands-on owl pellet dissection is included. 4th: Web of Life Students examine the connections between biotic and abiotic elements in nature while focusing on specific eating behaviors of animals and examples of food webs. 4th: Creek and Cherokee II Students gain a deeper understanding of how the native peoples who inhabited this area of Georgia used the land, river, wildlife, and other natural resources for their survival. 5th: Vertebrate Classification What do a bird, fish, frog, snake and rabbit all have in common? A backbone! Students will learn how scientists classify the five vertebrate groups.

Students will explain impacts of water quality, concept of life cycles and relationships found within the pond habitat. Wetland Ecology (2 hours) Using field sampling methods, students will study wetland soils and water to better understand the characteristics of a we t l a n d and the importance of this ecosystem. Pond Study & We t l a n d Ecology COMBO (4 hours) This is an intensive lesson combining both the Pond Study II and Wetland Ecology programs. P roject H 2 0 (3 hours 30 minute s) Bringing real world experiences to your students! Comparative chemical analysis of three ponds including temperature, dissolve d oxygen, ph and nitrate/phosphate l e vels. Students use macro i n ve rt e- brates as bioindicators to study land use and pollution, and the i m p o rtance of maintaining good water quality in the Chattahoochee River watershed.

3 STARLAB PROGRAMS Using an inflatable planetarium CNC educators will lead students on a journey through the night sky to view constellations, planets, and the solar system! Standard STARLAB programs are 1 hour, STARLAB with Creek & Cherokee is 2 hours. (Please inquire about space limitations if booking the STARLAB as an outreach program.) All programs are GPS correlated for each grade! STARLAB can be done both onsite at the CNC or at your school! 2nd: STARLAB I Students will learn about the brightness and color of stars as while viewing the constellations. Observe the phases of the moon through a hands-on activity using models. 4th: STARLAB II Students discover the difference between stars and planets and participate in a hands-on activity to learn about the Earth s seasons. 6th: STARLAB III Students will explore our earth s position in the solar system and the solar system s position in the Milky Way. We will also discuss deep sky objects, moon phases, seasons, and lunar and solar eclipses. 2nd: Creek and Cherokee I with STARLAB I or 4th: Creek and Cherokee II with STARLAB II Two programs in one! Students will first learn about the Creek and Cherokee peoples of Georgia then enter our planetarium for stargazing and listening to Native American myths about the stars! *Any of the STARLAB programs can be adapted for Astronomy Club meetings or classes! Skull Study Students observe the characteristics of mammal skulls and fossils to make inferences about feeding behavior. Endangered Species Students investigate complex issues, such as poaching and habitat destruction, that cause plants and animals to become rare or extinct. Pollution Solutions Students learn the difference between point and non-point source pollution using a model of the Chattahoochee River that runs through the classroom. Natures Neighborhood Students explore the needs of living things in their habitats as well as their relationship to their environment and the eco-regions of Georgia 5th Grade: Taxonomy 101 Students are introduced to the science of classification and build their own dichotomous key identification chart. All Around the Schoolyard Students take a field trip through their own schoolyard to determine the carrying capacity of the animals in this habitat. Suited for Survival Students move from station to station exploring how different animals are suited for survival in different habitats and compare learned behavior to inherited traits. Natural Connections Students use high-powered microscopes to examine the relationships organisms have with one another. Water Ways Students learn about the destructive and constructive forces of water using a streamtable, examine micro-invertebrates and use chemical and physical testing to determine the health of water samples.
