Content: a shift in the approach Current Policy Draft 1 HAZARD approach RISK approach TOXICITY TOXICITY + EXPOSURE 5

HAZARD + NO EXPOSURE = NO RISK HAZARD x EXPOSURE = RISK 6

Content: Policy elements Identification of HHPs Prioritization and categorization of HHPs Regulation of the use of HHPs taking into account risk Reparation and compensation of damages Monitoring of the impact of the FSC Pesticides Policy. 7

Current policy: hazard approach ALL PESTICIDES FSC HIGHLY HAZARDOUS PESTICIDES 351 PESTICIDES + 5 GROUPS ALL PROHIBITED 8

Element 1 - Identification ALL PESTICIDES MOST TOXIC 31 PESTICIDES + 5 GROUPS T O 351 VERY PESTICIDES TOXIC PESTICIDES GROUPS ALL PROHIBITED TOXIC X I C I T Y 200 PESTICIDES TOTAL = 351 PESTICIDES + 5 GROUPS 9

+ Element 2: Prioritization of criteria and categorization Toxicity 31 active ingredients + 5 groups 120 active ingredients Highly hazardous pesticides 1 of active ingredients - 12

+ Element 3: Regulation of the use of HHPs Toxicity PROHIBITED Exception: emergency situation or government order FSC HIGHLY RESTRICTED HHPs FSC RESTRICTED HHPs Only with Environmental and social risk assessment: o Identify and assess risks o Implement mitigation measures o Strive toward less hazardous alternatives o Scale, intensity and risk - 13

Element 3: Regulation of the use of HHPs Toxicity + PROHIBITED HIGHLY RESTRICTED HHPs FSC RESTRICTED HHPs Highly hazardous pesticides All chemical pesticides Follow requirements from National Standards - OTHER CHEMICAL PESTICIDES 14

Implementation FSC HIGHLY RESTRICTED HHPs FSC RESTRICTED HHPs Development global ESRA template Adaptation to national context Approval of adapted indicators by FSC CH carries out ESRA CB assesses compliance 15

Environmental and Social Risk Analysis for Pesticides Risk potential for pesticides Pesticides are chemical substances in which the toxicological and hazard potentials have small variation (formulation and the way that is delivered to the pest-target) Conditions of the pesticides use is what determines the potential of exposition to the farmer, other humans, environment and natural resources. Risk = f(toxicology and conditions of the use) 21

Elaboration Risk Analysis model Parameters proposed as main components Social Sprayer (training degree, use of PPI, quality of equipment's, ) Other worker in the forestry production (reentry interval, PPIs manage, ) Consumer Environment Toxicology for important components of the forestry biocenosis Birds Beneficial arthropod (bees, natural enemies, ) Earthworms Soil microbial activity (CO 2 soil evolution, nitrogen fixation, phosphorus solubilization,.) Natural resources Water (groundwater and superficial) Soil (contamination risk) 22
