1 ECOLEBAN CRITERIA FOR LEATHER FOOTWEAR USER S MANUAL This project is funded by The European Union ECOLEBAN

2 1 SCOPE The criteria shall apply only to shoes or footwear designed to protect or cover the feet with an upper of leather. 2 BACKGROUND The ECOLEBAN Project (Implementation of Environmental Management Systems and eco-labelling schemes in the SMEs of the leather sector in Bangladesh), funded by the European Commission under the Switch Asia Programme, is being implemented by Fundación Tecnalia Research & Innovation (TECNALIA, Spain, Beneficiary), Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leathergoods and Footwear Exporters Association (BFLLFEA, Bangladesh, partner), Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA, Bangladesh, partner) and Leathergoods & Footwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB, Bangladesh, partner). The ECOLEBAN aims at enhancing the resource efficiency and sustainability of the leather sector in Bangladesh throughout the whole value chain of the leather related products, such as footwear and other leather goods. Its specific objective is to increase the number of less polluting and more resource efficient leather products by means of the implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) (ISO 14001) and life cycle approaches (LCA, eco-design) in the SMEs, and promoting green commercialization and consumption through the use of eco-labelling. In the framework of this project the eco-labelling scheme for the Bangladeshi leather footwear has been designed. 3 OBJECTIVES OF THE ECOLEBAN eco-label The objective of the eco-labelling scheme is to reduce the environmental impact, improving the sustainability and resource efficiency of the leather sector in Bangladesh throughout the whole value chain and to promote green commercialization and consumption. The objective of the eco-label award is to recognize the SMEs in their sector that most contribute to the reduction of the environmental impact.
