14 GENERAL OPERATING CONCEPTS OUR SYSTEM IS A COMBINATION OF GRAVITY FED AND PUMPED SERVICE AREAS. OTISCO LAKE WATER TRAVELS FROM THE LAKE TO FAIRMOUNT AND TO WOLF/PARK STREET STATIONS BY GRAVITY MWB WATER HAS TO BE PUMPED FROM THE LAKE UP TO THE RESERVOIRS BEFORE IT CAN BE DISTRIBUTED EACH PUMP STATION IS WORKING TO MAINTAIN A LEVEL IN AN ASSOCIATED TANK TANKS ARE NECESSARY TO MAINTAIN PRESSURE AND MEET SHORT TERM PEAK DEMANDS, SUCH AS FIRE FIGHTING, MAJOR INDUSTRY CYCLES OR SUMMER TIME RESIDENTIAL DEMANDS

16 PRESSURE ZONES WHAT IS A PRESSURE ZONE? AN AREA OF THE SYSTEM THAT IS GENERAL SUPPLIED WATER FROM A TANK AND PUMP STATION. THE BOUNDARIES OF WHICH ARE CONTROLLED THROUGH NORMALLY CLOSED VALVES, OR PRV S. HOW MANY DOES OCWA HAVE? WHY? WE HAVE APPROXIMATELY 70 UNIQUE PRESSURE ZONES SHORT ANSWER: HILLS!

18 PRESSURE ZONES THE GOAL IS TO MAINTAIN BETWEEN 35 AND 80 PSI OF PRESSURE AT EVERY HOUSE SERVED. WE SHOULD NEVER BE LESS THAN 20 PSI. IF OUR ENTIRE SYSTEM WAS FLAT, WE COULD THEORETICALLY HAVE A SINGLE PRESSURE ZONE. ALL THE TANKS WOULD BE THE SAME ELEVATION AND ALL THE CUSTOMERS WOULD HAVE APPROXIMATELY THE SAME PRESSURE AT THEIR TAP. UNFORTUNATELY, TOPOGRAPHY CAUSES HIGHER AND LOWER PRESSURES. THE RESULT IS THE NEED TO HAVE PUMPS, TANKS, AND PRV S TO RAISE, MAINTAIN, AND LOWER THE PRESSURE ACCORDINGLY.

19 PRESSURE ZONES MANY AREA AND PRESSURE ZONES ARE INTER-CONNECTED IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTIFY OPERATIONS ABOUT REPAIRS, FLOW TESTS, TEST SHUTS, VALVE CLOSING, MAIN BREAKS, AND FLUSHING ACTIVITIES SO THAT THE INTERACTION OF THESE ZONES CAN BE MANAGED MANY OF THE ZONES ARE AUTOMATED AND WILL REACT TO THE CHANGES IN PRESSURE CAUSED BY VARIOUS ACTIVITIES

37 QUESTION 1 WHAT PERCENTAGE OF THE WORLDS WATER IS FRESH?

39 ABOUT 70% OF THE EARTH S SURFACE IS COVERED WITH WATER. 97% NINETY-SEVEN PERCENT OF THE WATER ON THE EARTH IS SALT WATER. SALT WATER IS FILLED WITH SALT AND OTHER MINERALS, AND HUMANS CANNOT DRINK THIS WATER. ALTHOUGH THE SALT CAN BE REMOVED, IT IS A DIFFICULT AND EXPENSIVE PROCESS. 2% TWO PERCENT OF THE WATER ON EARTH IS GLACIER ICE AT THE NORTH AND SOUTH POLES. THIS ICE IS FRESH WATER AND COULD BE MELTED; HOWEVER, IT IS TOO FAR AWAY FROM WHERE PEOPLE LIVE TO BE USABLE. <1% LESS THAN 1% OF ALL THE WATER ON EARTH IS FRESH WATER THAT WE CAN ACTUALLY USE. WE USE THIS SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER FOR DRINKING, TRANSPORTATION, HEATING AND COOLING, INDUSTRY, AND MANY OTHER PURPOSES.
