Workshop #8: Certification of Lidar-Assisted Control Applications Nikolai Hille, Steffen Raach, David Schlipf, Andrew Scholbrock, Eric Simley 2018 IEA Wind Task 32 General Meeting October 22, 2018

Loads and Control Activities Workshop #2: Optimizing Lidar Design for Wind Turbine Control Applications Workshop #8: Certification of Lidar-Assisted Control Applications Hosted at the American Control Conference, Boston, MA, July 2016 Workshop report Optimizing Lidars for Wind Turbine Control Applications Results from the IEA Wind Task 32 Workshop published in Remote Sensing, June 2018 Hosted by DNV GL, Hamburg, Germany, January 2018 Workshop report IEA Wind Task 32: Best Practices for the Certification of Lidar-Assisted Control Applications presented at WindEurope 2018 and published in Journal of Physics: Conference Series in September 2018 Workshop #10: Turbulence Intensity Measurements with LiDARs Applications to Loads Verification and Site Suitability Hosted by Ørsted, Gentofte, Denmark, September 2018 NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATORY 2

Workshop Overview Motivation Lidar-assisted control (LAC) is a promising technology capable of significantly reducing structural loads and increasing energy capture Currently standard guidelines do not exist for certifying wind turbines using LAC! Difficult for wind turbine manufacturers to assess value creation Interdisciplinary approach needed Workshop Objectives Gain understanding of type certification Gain common understanding of challenges of certification with LAC Certifiers, turbine manufacturers, lidar suppliers, researchers Develop ideas for solving the identified challenges Create a document containing suggestions for best practices for certification with LAC NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATORY 3

Workshop Overview Workshop hosted by DNV GL in Hamburg, January 2018 Workshop leader: Nikolai Hille, DNV GL Workshop Structure Participants 47 experts from 9 countries Lidar suppliers (11), turbine manufacturers (15), certifiers and consultants (11), researchers (10) What is type certification and how is it affected by LAC? What are the challenges for type certification with LAC? How should we certify wind turbines with LAC? NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATORY 4

What is Type Certification and How is it Affected by LAC? Certification is the confirmation of design requirements by an accredited party based on accepted standards Three main modules Design Evaluation Manufacturing Evaluation Type Testing LiDAR System Control & Protection System Design Loads Electrical Installations Machinery Type Testing Areas affected by LAC NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATORY 5

What are the Challenges for Type Certification with LAC? Lidar Manufacturers Wind Turbine Manufacturers Consultants Researchers Quantifying availability and measurement accuracy Including proprietary wind field reconstruction methods in certification process Certifying turbines with LAC for extreme load reduction Addressing limited availability during extreme events Shaping future design standards Developing realistic lidar simulator compatible with variety of wind turbine simulation tools Develop LAC methods that account for changing measurement quality Create more realistic wind field models NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATORY 6

How Should We Certify Turbines with LAC? Lidar System Control and Protection System Design Loads Type Testing Perform Failure Mode and Effect Analysis Agree on standardized definitions of availability and uncertainty for control Require feedback control system as backup Require a lidar quality signal and perform sanity checks on lidar measurements Capture load relevant lidar measurement details in time or frequency domain Lidar manufacturer provides lidar simulator DLL Design Load Cases with and w/o LAC, lidar failure, etc. Realistic extreme event simulations with turbulence Test matrix should include periods with and w/o LAC, different atmospheric conditions Independent wind measurements for comparison Evaluate lidar fault cases NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATORY 7

Workshop Outcome Suggestions for best practices for certification with LAC presented at 2018 WindEurope Poster presentation Workshop report published in Journal of Physics: Conference Series Ideas being incorporated into DNV GL s guidelines for wind turbine certification with LAC Challenges remain! Example: realistic extreme event simulations NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATORY 8
