1 ADVOCATING CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION AND MITIGATION INITIATIVES FOR YOUTHS IN SAME DISTRICT PROJECT TITLE: Advocating youth s initiatives for Climate Change in Same District Kilimanjaro. Introduction Hope for Tanzania is a Nongovernmental organization based in Same District of Kilimanjaro Region. It is legally registered under the Non-Governmental Organizations Act, no. 24 of 2002 of the Laws of Tanzania and bears Registration No: 07NGO/ Broad Objective: To raise awareness of youths in Same district, involve them, build their capacities and in inculcate the practice of adapting and mitigating adverse effects of climate change, while contributing to productivity and poverty reduction. Specific Objectives To have 150 youths from 3 villages sensitized on climate change, environmental conservation, poverty reduction and climate change related interventions by May 2018 Beneficiaries Primary Beneficiaries are 150 youths (75 females, 75 males from 6 villages of Makasa, Kirangare and Vunta. Tanzanian shillings = US Dollars See attached Budget. Planned activities Awareness creation trough training on climate change, fund raising, environmental conservation, Small scale income generating projects, alternative energies preferably efficient stoves solar and biogas. Problem statement o High rate of deforestation o Excessive tree cutting through encroachment to o Illegal harvesting of trees and forest products for economic gain and construction. Firewood for heating purposes. o High demands of energy thus charcoal and high demands of timber for construction and economic gain. o SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS o Excessive use charcoal and firewood for energy/ heating purposes o Over 90% of people depend on charcoal and firewood for energy/ heating purposes including brick curing. o They also depend timber for construction and economic gain o The whole of the District has an increasing

2 environmental destruction, due to land degradation and ineffective enforcement of laws. This has reduced soil fertility causing low Crop yield per unit area. There is a significant water runoff during rainy seasons, causing erosion in the highlands and floods in the lowlands (United Republic of Tanzania 2009). o There is high land degradation due to pastoral /poor livestock keeping system and poor farming methods. o There is persistent uncontrolled fire burns during farm preparations. Population. o According to population census 2013, Same District has a population of 269, 809 people of whom 137, 603 are females and 132,206 are males. Population growth is 1.8 per annum. Total number of households in the District is 53,024 with an average household s size of 5 people. What the project will do This project will involve 150 youths in (75 males and 75 females) in the awareness rising sessions on climate change, build their capacities and in inculcate the culture environmental conservation and enhance adaption and mitigation of adverse effects of climate change, while contributing to productivity and poverty reduction. The project will pave the way to soliciting sources of funds for establishment of Small scale income generating projects and use of alternative energies. Rationale and Justification Climate change is by no means a hazard which is largely influenced by human activities in the advancement or development process and whose effects become detrimental to livelihood. According to International panel on climate change IPCC Adjustment in natural or human systems to a new or changing environment becomes inevitable. Adaptation to climate change refers to adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or

3 expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities. Key Success Factors Implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project through participatory approach. Full youths involvement and active participation. Availability of multi disciplinary team of staff in the organization with Local Government Authority. Strong collaboration and good workmanship between Hope for Tanzania, partners, and leadership at District, ward, villages and community to facilitate exchange of experiences, knowledge and skills. Monitoring and Evaluation Project supervision, monitoring and evaluation will be conducted routinely and through participatory approach in all levels of implementation Sustainability plan Hope for Tanzania Organization Board of Directors will oversee all program undertakings in collaboration with the management. Hope for Tanzania will continuously work with youths, community key leaders, and collaborating with the District council as frequently as required for technical support and advice. Trained leaders will oversee and supervise implementation including planting trees, will perpetually mobilize the community people to maintain the eroded areas in the project villages using the traditional self-help methods commonly known as Msaragambo whenever it is required. They will strengthen community laws reinforcement for effective environmental protection and safeguard environment.
