Operation & Maintenance of Onsite Treatment Units Presented by Ronald R. Thomas, Licensed Alternative Onsite System Operator

Most Popular Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Advantex BioMicrobics Delta EcoPod EZ Treat Puraflo*

Media Filters Advantex EZ Treat Puraflo

Peat Systems (Puraflo)

Suspended Media Hybrids Biomicrobics MicroFast Delta Ecopods

Suspended Media Systems Delta DF Units Clearstream Activated Sludge unit with built in clarifier

Before you start.... Provide contract to owners. Contract duration is generally 1 to 3 years. Some clients will call to service once a year or whatever the requirement is. Logistically, a contract works best

Critical Documents you will need: Copy of the Install Permit System Design Copy O&M Manual

Also useful: Accurate start up information for system. Maybe written on inside of control panel door.

Getting Started: Suspended Media and Hybrid Systems Expose treatment components by removing access riser lids Turn off blowers (if present)

Check Solids in Tanks You ll need a Sludge Judge

Sludge Judge Septic and Trash Tanks: 33% to 50% ATU s: 35% - 60%--varies according to the manufacturer Be sure to sludge judge both sides of a baffled tank!

Effluent Filters Located in outlet end of the septic tank or trash tank

Cleaning an Effluent Filter Clean Annually If the filter has a screen, then the filter can be easily removed and hosed down with water from a garden hose. If the filter has no screen and there is solids build up in the tank, the tank must be pumped down to below the outlet invert before cleaning the filter. If the filter has no screen and there is minimal solids build up in the tank, remove the filter; clean and reinsert the filter as quickly as possible.

Electrical Component Check Check amperage on the blower motor and pump motors Refer to factory specifications

Suspended and Hybrid Media Units Color Odor Verify good aeration of effluent in ATU Turbulence Generally will require more frequent pump outs

Fixed Film Units Most fixed film units are recirculating units. Check media for clogging Check for sloughed solids

Fixed Film Units: Advantex & EZ Treat Spray media with water hose to clean media top and flush module Clean manifold piping May need to remove manifold Check head on manifold EZ Treat Pressure Gauge Advantex Orifice Spray Height

Recirculating Valves Some fixed film units have recirculating valves. These need to be cleaned periodically with a water hose. Verify the valve elevation for proper recirculation.

Biotubes A type of effluent filter used before entering the pump vault Remove & Clean

Fixed Film Units: Puraflo Usually a single pass system. Open all modules and inspect the peat. Does the peat look like jello? Is it gray and gooey? Has it lost it s texture? Is water standing in the modules? Probe Peat and fluff peat from bottom to top

Concerned about Peat viability? Collect a sample from the sample port for BOD 5 analysis

Disinfection Units

Chlorinators and De-chlorinators Check the feed tubes for tablets and to ensure the tablets are in contact with the waste flow. Clean the feed tubes and add tablets as needed. Check the structural integrity for lawn mower disease.

UV Disinfection Ensure bulb functions properly. Verify alarm functions properly. Remove bulb & clean with water and towel. Do not use detergent or Windex to clean.

Turbine Distribution Pumps Any system with a turbine pump (well type pump) will need to be removed from the pump vault and have the intake screen and piping cleaned.

Final Effluent Observations Color Odor Dissolved Oxygen in final discharge pump chamber DO meter ph in final discharge pump chamber ph meter

Formal Testing Collect samples for BOD5, TSS, other parameters as specified in the O&M Manual Frequency as determined by regulations and/or O&M Manual
