9 UNIDO ITPO Italy and Renewable Energy in Botswana Last 11 December 2015 in Paris, France the Ministry of Environment of Italy and the Ministry of Environment of Botswana signed a Memorandum of Understanding title Co-operation in the field of Climate Change Vulnerability, Risk Assessment, Adaptation and Mitigation. The agreement in Art 2.1 (g) indicates the promotion and development of the use of renewable energies (RE), in order to achieve the target established by the Republic of Botswana. November 2016, the Investment and Technology Promotion Office in Rome Italy of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO ITPO, Italy) has sign an agreement with the Italian Ministry of Environment to carry out the necessary actions to develop the objective 2.1 (g) of the MoU. The objective is to support Botswana Government in identifying and promoting best practices and technology transfer opportunities, providing ad hoc capacity building activities in selected renewable energy with the aim of supporting sustainable development, local job creation and fostering international and innovative partnerships. 9

10 Implementation of the IP project Inception Mission to Gaborone (17-25 March) achieving the interest of Botswana to work in the Solar and Biogas sector as priorities and engaging the private and public sector in Botswana. 11 Opportunities in the Solar Sector The solar industry in Botswana has a big potential. The Country receives over 3200 hours of sunshine per year, with an average insulation on horizontal surface of 21 MJ7/m2 and average 320 clear, sunny days per year; Future Projects: Provide energy to isolated communities without grid with photovoltaic off-grid technologies. A 100 MW solar plant Major implications of solar energy: Solar PV technologies, Solar Cooling, Passive Solar Design, Solar Cooking, Solar Water Heating In the rural areas, the main applications of solar energy are: o solar pumps for pumping drinking water or small-scale irrigation system o PV systems for micro-communities with the aim to recharge the batteries (photovoltaic kits for the communities); o small refrigerators, communication systems (radio), micro water treatment plants The main applications of solar thermal are: o hot water for individual homes, farms, hotels, hospitals, holiday resorts; o home heating, solar heating of livestock buildings; o drying, solar cooling 11

12 Opportunities in the Biogas Sector In the second communication of Botswana to the UNFCCC it was indicated the willingness of the country to replace fuel wood with the use of LPG and biogas. Botswana is currently developing a project with the support of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Program field office in Botswana (UNDP) as an implementation Agency in which is promoting the utilization of biogas from agro-waste in South Eastern Botswana. The abovementioned project aims to deliver small-scale biogas and bio-fertilizer, especially for women. The project intends to develop 1000 small digesters, 3 medium scale digesters (including Lobatse BMC) and I large scale digester from municipal waste. Botswana indicates the need for technology transfer in the different phases of the biogas industrial chain of production: Biomass for the production of wood chip briquetting, the development and transformation of elephant grass; Technology transfer for biogas production in which is necessary to develop sewerage biogas generation, slaughterhouse biogas generation and landfill biogas generation. 12
