CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Research opportunities at K-State are diverse and growing. The openness and interest of the chemical engineering faculty makes undergraduate research accessible. Clint Barb, chemical engineering student

PROGRAM OVERVIEW Chemical engineers master the fundamental science of chemistry and physics, along with the engineering skills needed to design and implement processes to produce energy, chemicals and advanced materials. These processes improve agriculture production, consumer products, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medicines, medical devices and microelectronics. An undergraduate degree in chemical engineering positions a student well for advanced studies in business, medicine or law. AREAS OF EMPHASIS ENERGY Chemical engineers focusing on energy explore new sources of energy, oil and gas, and renewable and sustainable energy. BIOLOGY An emphasis in biology covers topics such as healthcare, medicines, biofuels and biochemicals. ADVANCED MATERIALS Polymers, composites, semiconductors and solar cells are a few examples of advanced materials chemical engineers research and develop. KEY ACADEMIC AREAS * MATH AND SCIENCE COURSES Math/Physics Biology/Chemistry ENGINEERING DESIGN/ TECHNICAL COURSES Chemical Processes Technical Electives *General education electives not included PROCESS DESIGN This area focuses on the design of reactors and separators to manufacture all types of commodity chemicals and consumer goods including fuels, foods and plastics.

MAKE AN IMPACT CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY Chemical engineers have and continue to contribute to society by making clean water abundant to improve public health. increasing food production with sustainable fertilizers and insecticides. powering the world with cheap, plentiful and variable energy sources. making the environment cleaner even as the world s population increases. developing new materials such as better textiles for more comfortable clothing, nonstick cookware, antimicrobial surface coatings and even artificial tissues. developing new ways of sensing chemical and biological agents for national security. scaling up the manufacture of drugs and antibiotics to improve the quality of life. increasing computational power and enabling the internet by improving fabrication of integrated circuits.

GET INVOLVED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH Students have the opportunity to do research under the direction of chemical engineering faculty in areas such as developing and modeling new catalysts to produce biofuels and degrade atmospheric pollutants, creating new polymers for delivering therapeutic gases and building novel interfaces for biological applications such as sensors. CREATIVE INQUIRY DESIGN TEAM CHEM-E-CAR TEAM A team of students competes in regional and national competitions with a model car they designed that is propelled by a chemical reaction for a specified distance with a specified weight. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR CHEMICAL ENGINEERS (AIChE) The student chapter of AIChE hosts speakers from industry to help with professional development. Students learn about the profession by attending regional and national meetings. BIODIESEL INITIATIVE The biodiesel club is a student-led organization dedicated to research, production and innovation of biodiesel on the K-State campus.

OPPORTUNITIES CAREERS A wide range of career possibilities are available for chemical engineers, which include working in process design, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, food production/ safety and energy. Chemical engineering graduates pursue careers as process engineers biochemical engineers pharmaceutical engineers project engineers/managers technical sales engineers plant/operations managers continuous improvement engineers environmental engineers OF K-STATE CHEMICAL ENGINEERING GRADUATES ARE EMPLOYED, OR ENROLLED IN GRADUATE OR PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS WITHIN SIX MONTHS OF GRADUATION. IS THE AVERAGE STARTING SALARY FOR A K-STATE CHEMICAL ENGINEERING GRADUATE. INTERNSHIPS Internships allow chemical engineering students to put coursework into practice, learn about teamwork and industrial safety, and show off their talents. Internships provide a competitive edge when graduates look for permanent positions.

K-STATE CHEMICAL ENGINEERING ALUMNI LIVE IN... K-State prepared me to contribute in my field by not only teaching me the fundamentals of chemical engineering, but how to work with 46 STATES AND 29 COUNTRIES! NUMBER OF ALUMNI: a design or lab team to solve problems. Laura Winks 99, chemical engineering
