2 A SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIP Down2Earth Materials is an Irish endeavour initiated by Southern Tapes & Packaging in 2009 to supply local food producers with a small range of eco packaging options. Since its establishment it has evolved into an award-winning business that works alongside VEGWARE in supplying Ireland s largest range of certified compostable catering disposables to over 400 businesses throughout Ireland. This brochure is to act as an overview only. For more information and a full productlist please visit our website or call us on / KNOWING WHAT S WHAT - COMPOSTABLE Vs. BIODEGRADABLE COMPOSTABLE: If an item is compostable it means that this item will break down into nutrient-rich soil within 180 days when commercially composted. BIODEGRADABLE: If an item is biodegradable, it will break down but the length of time it takes to break down is unspecified. CERTIFIED COMPOSTABLE MEANS IT IS GUARANTEED TO FULLY DECOMPOSE INTO SOIL IN UNDER 12 WEEKS WHEN COMMERCIALLY COMPOSTED. For foodservice, compostable packaging really is the most convenient when it comes to recycling. It does not matter if the packaging is covered with ketchup or even has half a sandwich left in it IT CAN ALL GO IN THE BROWN BIN. Although the products are made of mixed materials, they are all completely compostable, meaning they all share the same recycling stream. In organics recycling, compostable packaging turns into nutrient-rich compost within 8-12 weeks. The compost can be used to grow more plants, thus creating a closed loop cycle. 2 3

3 BAGASSE TABLEWARE Bagasse is basically recycled sugarcane. It is made from the fibrous material left after sugarcane has been pressed. It is a sturdy material with great thermal properties - ideal for tableware and takeaway boxes. BAGASSE Vs POLYSTYRENE Smarter than polystyrene, bagasse tableware stacks compactly and is freezer & microwavable safe. Applications Our versatile range of bagasse taweaway boxes and containers can be used beteen -20 C and 120 C in the oven, microwave or freezer. 5 PLANT-BASED COLDCUPS Made from PLA - Polylactic Acid - it is a clear biopolymer made from plants, not plastic. Perfect for cold cups, deli containers and clear windows. Completely compostable of course! Wide Variety of Uses Due to its strength and rigidity it is perfect for cold drinks, salads or desserts up to 40 C. 2-4oz portion pots fit our slim cold cups as an insert for snack combos. 6 PLA-LINED HOT CUPS Made from a sustainably sourced board with a plant-base PLA lining. These single & double wall hot cups are low carbon and completely compostable. Single wall hot cups range in size from 4oz - 20oz Double wall hot cups range in size from 8oz - 16oz What About the Lids? Don t worry - we ve thought of this. CPLA lids has 62% less carbon than plastic. They are made from plant-based PLA that has been strengthened for use. CPLA can take heat up to 85 C so it s perfect for cutlery, soup container lids and hot cup lids. 11 A CLOSED LOOP SYSTEM LOCAL LAND Compostable food packaging is much easier and cheaper to recycle than it would be to recycle conventional packaging. There is no need to clean the packaging as you would for conventional recycling - all compostable products go into the brown bin together with the food waste, making it simple and convenient. Recycling food waste and packaging together eliminates consumer confusion of which bin to use it can all go into the same bin even the leftover piece of sandwich. It will also reduce waste to landfill and incineration, both of which are more expensive per tonne The compost produced from Down2Earth packaging is spread on local agricultural land for Irish plants and crops. Conventional packaging uses a mix of materials with different recycling streams. Card, plastic, foil, films, foam. Many of these materials may be recyclable if kept separate, but the very nature of the foodservice packaging means that materials of different recycling streams are glued together. Although Down2Earth packaging is made of mixed materials, they are all completely compostable, meaning they all share the same recycling stream. Compostable packaging & food waste is recycled into compost here in Ireland, supporting Irish jobs versus dry recycling ending up abroad (more carbon wasted) or in landfills across Ireland (if contaminated).
