ZEPT- Zero Emission Porto Tolle Project time schedule Activities carried out in the frame of the EEPR Grant Agreement signed in December 2009 with European Commission 9

ZEPT- R&D Supporting Activities CO 2 capture pilot plant At the site of Brindisi coal fired power station a pilot plant for CO 2 separation via amine scrubbing was built and commissioned. The plant is installed on the Unit 4. The pilot plant is composed by a flue gas pretreatment section (able to remove completely the particulate and the SO 3 and to reduce SO 2 level below 20 mg/nm 3 ) and by a CO 2 separation unit Brindisi The plant size is Nm 3 /h, capturing about 2,5 t/h of CO 2 Goal to: gain experience in CCU designing and operation, and assess the environmental impact of the process Unit 4 10

ZEPT- CO 2 capture pilot plant Plant commissioning completed. Operation start: October

ZEPT R&D Supporting Activities Integrated CCS pilot project The first Italian integrated CCS pilot project is under development in the frame of the Eni - Enel cooperation agreement signed in It will include: Capture Enel s post-combustion capture pilot plant in Brindisi in operation from mid-2010 and separating at least 5000 tco 2 /y Liquefaction CO 2 liquefaction and criogenic storage system to be built in Brindisi treating the CO 2 produced by the pilot capture plant CORTEMAGGIORE Transport by truck Storage ENI gas field in Cortemaggiore (Piacenza). Injection start: autumn Total CO 2 injected: ton BRINDISI It is also forseen to build in Brindisi a closed loop CO 2 pilot pipeline to develop knowledge to be used in the demo transport system design. 12

ZEPT CCS Demo Activities Power Unit Capture Compression and transport Injection Deep saline aquifer CO 2 path Activities in progress: Cap rock impermeable layer CO 2 1 km Selection of the CO 2 capture technology : development of 4 FEED s under way Development of the FEED for transport pipeline and injection infrastructure Selection and assessment of the storage site : geological site modelling and appraisal well design Development of the financial plan 13

Financial challenges in demonstrating CCS 14

Financial feasibility of CCS demos Construction and operational risks Project promoters are bearing relevant constructions and operational risks Incremental costs of CCS Public needs to cover most of the economic gap Cost of a power plant without CCS The economic gap for a typical CCS demo project is of the order of 1b 15

Public funding assumptions for ZEPT demo A grant from the EEPR fund 100 M under the Grant Agreement signed in Dec A substantial contribution from NER 300 fund Call for proposals expected by July 2010 A significant funding from Italian Government The Energy Law (99/2009) provides for economic support to CCS demos EU ETS auction revenues could be used 16

ZEPT- Decision gates Prelim. Invest. Decision Apr Years Cost evaluation not to exceed Final Invest. Decision Oct NER 300 bid Financial Plan closure NOTICE TO PROCEED Construction start June 2013 CCS demo permitting 17

The Enel s CCS Communication Plan 18

The Enel s CCS Communication Plan The objective of Enel s CCS communication campaign is to present Carbon Capture and Storage as a fundamental part in the mix of Climate Change Solutions 19

Our strategy: 2010 Action Plan basic Objectives Activity/ Project Notes Images Project Website Newsletter Management for a monthly update Inform on CO2 and CCS leveraging Enel s role as 1st mover Video CCS (Post Combustion) Brochure Zero Emissions Scientific Workshops/ Seminars Also usable for Info Center To be updated and reprinted (It and Eng) Sponsorships also used for institutional relations Advertising Campaign Re-use of Environmental campaign Brochure CCS Brindisi To be produced in English for international guests Visibility to Enel Brindisi project CCS Identity for external guests and visits Allow instructive visits and educational contents Promote importance of CCS for the country Promote CCS Observatory Fondazione Ronchi Participate at existing CCS associations Focused on Regulatory Issues Institutional Strategy Opinion building and monitoring regarding CCS Public Opinion Research (Quantitative on National level and Qualitative on a local level) Media Relations Re-use of Environmental campaign National and Local Level 20

Enel CCS Pubblic Support Messaging Model Common Goal Umbrella message To promote information and acceptance of Enel s CCS projects through an overall understanding and positive perception of the CCS technology CCS is a fundamental part of Enel s mix of Climate Change Solutions as a safe, reliable and urgent technology which can be deployed to contain existing emissions from fossil fuel generation assets. Enel s mix includes also increased efficiency and increased generation from CO2 free energy sources (including renewables and nuclear). Supporting messages CCS: safe, reliable, and urgent. CCS fundamental to reduce emissions from existing plants CCS is mixed with efficiency and CO2 free capacity (RES, nuclear) Economic impact Safety: capture, storage, transport Reliability: - Existing experiences - International standards (CCS guidelines) - Research/High credible Institution involved (MIT) Urgency: - International Studies (IEA) - Case Study (task force USA) - Europe situation (CCS strategy) - Alarm by Environmental associations Energetic Scenario/ Need to reduce carbon footprint. CCS role vs Plant Efficiency (both are needed) CCS minimal environmental impact al local level Other mitigation actions CSR, fight against deforestation, CDM Enel s commitment to plant efficiency and low environmental impact: -Clean coal (BAT) -Reduction of specific waste -Plants and environment (ambientalizzazione impianti) -Re-use byproducts from other plants CO2 FREE energy sources: -Enel/Renewables -Enel/Nuclear -Enel s commitment to 21 promote energy efficiency Need for adequate European and National financial support to CCS demonstration Increase of EUA s price (Cap and Trade) will reduce CCS economic gap Benefits for consumers by balanced energy mix (CO2 reduction without CCS much more expensive).
