16 Recycling: Expanding Collection for Plastics Packaging Partnered with several cities. Led to addition of all bottles, tubs, lids & film/bags in curbside programs. Models replicated across Canada.

17 Diversion Progress: Recycling of Plastics Packaging Growing 2010 Plastics recycled in 2010 by major category (kg) 15% increase in plastics recycled compared to A 36% increase in film. 6% increase in nonbottle rigids. 13% increase in bottles collected.

24 How Much Energy are we Landfilling in the Form of Plastics? The equivalent of 86 million GJ of energy: Enough to fuel more than 600,000 cars for a year. Enough to supply almost 500,000 households with electricity. Source: Waste To Energy Research and Technology Council, Columbia University

25 Recycling & Energy Recovery = Higher Diversion

26 Recovery Option - EFW E.G. Metro Vancouver Facility Sustainable Energy Energy sufficient to heat and power 13,300 homes annually. Clean Dioxin and Furans are recorded as zero by Environment Canada. The amount of GHG emissions is 0.6% of total emissions in the lower Fraser Valley. Complementary with recycling Over the facility s lifetime, the regional recycling rate increased from about 26% to 55%.

27 Recovery Option - Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) Plastics as solid fuel at cement kilns, industrial boilers, power plants." Commercially established." Replacement for coal and petroleum coke."

28 Recovery Option Gasification to Fuels E.G. Edmonton Facility Large - Will consume 100,000 tonnes of co-mingled plastics and residuals annually. Sustainable Energy - Will produce 36 million litres of ethanol-enough to fuel 18,000 cars. Clean - Heavy metals, Chlorine, Florine, Sulpher, Dioxines and particulates will be below detection limit. Reduces city s carbon footprint - by 6 million tonnes of carbon-dioxide over 25 years. Well accepted no negative reports in media - all comments from public during consultation positive.

29 Recovery Option - Pyrolysis Plastics to Fuels Non-recycled plastics as feedstock. Pyrolysis process uses heat to de-polymerize plastics. Outputs range from liquid fuels to industrial waxes.

30 Conclusions Plastics contributions are many - using a small % of resources to do the job. Keeping the molecule in play will be key. We need to grow plastics recycling; that alone will not get to 100% diversion. Improved recycling and energy recovery will help create a more sustainable future. Adopt a hierarchy of waste management to incentivize resource recovery. Plastics - too valuable to waste!
