Selcoperm SES 1 1. General information Fundamentals of disinfection Many diseases are transmitted by drinking water. Among these diseases are typhus, paratyphoid, cholera and diarrhoea with vomiting, as well as viral infections such as hepatitis and poliomyelitis. Legionella in shower or bathing water can provoke pulmonary diseases. Compared to the chemical contamination of water, where toxicity values are attained only slowly in general, in a drinking water epidemic infections spread dramatically in the whole supply area. The best prevention of epidemics is to use microbiologically clean non polluted water, preferably deep ground water as drinking water. Unfortunately, in some regions this is not possible for hydrogeological or quantitative reasons. In these regions, surface water is used, which often has to be purified. Pathogens that are possibly encountered, can be removed from the water or killed by adding certain substances to the water, i.e. by disinfecting the water. General information Disinfection with chlorine The most widespread disinfectant used in the treatment of drinking water is chlorine, which can be applied in a variety of ways. History has taught us that, in bacteriological terms, chlorinating water is a quite safe way of disinfecting drinking water. After all, more than 100 years have passed since chlorine was used to disinfect drinking water for the first time. Many years of experience have shown that acute toxicity can be excluded, when chlorination is executed correctly. Generally, three methods are used for chlorinating drinking and process water: Chlorine gas dosing Dosing of commercial sodium hypochlorite solution or calcium hypochlorite solution Electrolytic sodium hypochlorite generation on site The third method in particular offers a number of advantages, which are incorporated in the Selcoperm chlorine electrolysis systems.

1 Selcoperm SES General information The Selcoperm electrolysis principle With electrolysis, sodium hypochlorite is produced directly from a solution of common salt using electricity. NaCl H 2 O - Cathode Fig. 1 H 2 NaClO NaOH Cl 2 H + H 2 O OH - Na + NaCl Cl - Selcoperm electrolysis principle NaClO solution The following reactions take place in the electrolysis cell: 2NaCl + 2H 2 O 2NaOH + Cl 2 + H 2 The chlorine (Cl 2 ) produced reacts immediately with the caustic soda solution (NaOH) also formed, resulting in a sodium hypochlorite solution (NaClO): Cl 2 + 2NaOH NaCl + NaClO + H 2 O The sodium hypochlorite solution, which is the disinfectant, has a ph value between 8.5 and 9.5, and a chlorine concentration of 8 g/l. It has a half-life of several months, which makes it ideal for storage in a buffer tank. After dosing the solution into the water flow, no ph value correction is necessary, as it is often required e.g. in electrolysis according to the membrane principle. The sodium hypochlorite solution reacts in a balance reaction, resulting in hypochlorous acid (HClO), the effective disinfectant: NaClO + H 2 O NaOH + HClO The resulting hypochlorous acid is the actually effective compound for disinfection of the water. The dissociation of acid to anions is primarily according to an equilibrium dependent on the ph value according to the equation: HClO + H 2 O H O + + ClO - + Anode TM Benefits of the electrolysis with Selcoperm Safe and reliable method of producing sodium hypochlorite on-site Common salt is the base material - it is non-toxic, easy to store and easy to handle Only water, common salt and electricity are needed for the electrolysis - low operating costs, world-wide use Fresh sodium hypochlorite is always on hand and does not dissociate like commercial sodium hypochlorite solutions Low formation of chlorate as a by-product Less safety requirements than chlorine-gas-based systems Lower ph value than commercial sodium hypochlorite reduces scaling of injection units etc. in hard water areas Robust design for easy installation and maintenance Long service life, compared with membrane cell electrolysis Applications Typical disinfection applications for Selcoperm systems are especially in drinking water treatment, water treatment for industrial processes and cooling towers. The systems are an excellent alternative to chlorine gas or commercial sodium hypochlorite applications. Remark: Legislation on the use of disinfectants in water treatment applications is country-specific. Please contact your local Grundfos sales office for further details on the use of our products in your application and area. % HClO Fig. 2 % ClO - HClO ClO ph 0 C 10 C 0 C Dissociation of hypochlorous acid in dependence of the water ph value TM The dosing quantity depends on the application as well as the local regulations. In general, the concentration after the injection unit is 0. to 2 ppm chlorine equivalent. 4

Selcoperm SES 2 2. Selcoperm Electrolysis System (SES) Description The Selcoperm electrolysis system is a modular system for the safe production of a 0.8 % sodium hypochlorite solution from a diluted brine solution. The system is suitable for the disinfection of drinking water and industrial process water. The intended use of the Selcoperm system comprises the stationary operation either in continuous or batch processing. Installation scheme I H ATEX zone 2 radius 1-2 m Selcoperm Electrolysis System (SES) F 4 A K E C 1 D G B I TM Fig. Installation scheme of a Selcoperm system Pos. Component Description A Water softener The water softener provides the softened mains water required for the electrolysis. B Chiller and/or heater To provide the right mains water temperature, an optional chiller or heater can be used. C Brine tank The brine tank is used for preparation and storage of brine. D Brine dosing station The brine dosing station doses the required amount of brine into the process. E F G Selcoperm electrolyser Rectifier Degassing and storage tank with sensors and degassing fan The Selcoperm electrolyser comprises: Electrolysis cells Hydraulic chamber Control cabinet 7" multi-colour touchscreen for operating and monitoring of the whole electrolysis system The rectifier converts the alternating current (AC) from the power supply into the direct current (DC) needed to run the Selcoperm electrolyser. In the degassing and storage tank the hydrogen gas is removed from the sodium hypochlorite solution. The degassing and storage tank must be installed as close as possible to the Selcoperm electrolyser. The level inside the tank is monitored by a level sensor. The degassing fan ensures a safe dilution and removal of hydrogen gas. The sodium hypochlorite solution can be dosed directly from the tank to the point of application. It is also possible to pump the sodium hypochlorite solution from the tank into separate storage tanks. H Gas warning system The gas warning system permanently monitors the concentration of hydrogen gas at the installation location. I Building ventilation Natural ventilation via ventilation holes or technical ventilation is required at the installation location. Legal requirements and local standards must be observed. K DC cable set Flexible insulated copper cable for direct current connection between the Selcoperm electroyser and the rectifier. 1 Soft water line 2 Brine line Sodium hypochlorite solution line Besides the sodium hypochlorite solution this line contains hydrogen gas, which is removed in the downstream degassing and storage tank. 4 Exhaust air line Through this line the dilution air (99 %) and the hydrogen gas (1 %) are removed from the degassing and storage tank by means of forced ventilation. The exhaust air line has to be directed with a constant upwards incline to a safe discharge point outside the building. 5 Sodium hypochlorite solution line to the point of application - Drain A drain for maintenance is required on site. 5

2 Selcoperm SES Selcoperm Electrolysis System (SES) Functioning and control Saturated brine from the brine tank (C) is dosed by the brine dosing station (D) into the Selcoperm electrolyser (E), where it is mixed with softened water from the softener (A) in a specified proportion. The resulting diluted brine is led into the electrolysis cells inside the Selcoperm electrolyser (E), where it is converted into sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen by means of direct current (DC) from the rectifier (F). The resulting mixture is led through a line with a slight upwards incline of at least 1 % into the degassing and storage tank (G). The degassing fan at the tank (G) ensures safe dilution and removal of the hydrogen gas to a safe external discharge point. The sodium hypochlorite solution can be dosed directly from the tank (G) to the point of application. It is also possible to pump the sodium hypochlorite solution from the tank (G) into separate storage tanks. All components and safety functions are monitored and operated via a multi-colour touchscreen at the Selcoperm electrolyser (E). Unique selling points Unique safety concept, evaluated with technical report by a third-party expert from TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH No explosion-proof area needed inside the building Flow-proportional brine dosing for precise brine concentration Standardised modular system Outstanding performance data Convenient 7" multi-colour touchscreen with self-explanatory menu structure Innovative housing design for easy maintenance, flexible installation and safe operation Chemically resistant housing material High quality standard: Every Selcoperm electrolyser is checked for 100 % performance and tightness at the factory Remote maintenance (optional) Safety concept A reliable safety concept for the operation of the whole system is mandatory, because hydrogen is produced as a by-product in the electrolysis cells. Before even entering the degassing and storage tank (G), most of the hydrogen is diluted by the degassing fan to 25 % of the lower explosive limit (LEL) and led away into the atmosphere. In the tank the residual hydrogen escapes, is diluted and led away into the atmosphere as well. The whole Selcoperm electrolysis system is monitored permanently and redundantly. Several sensors at the system, together with hydrogen sensors at the installation location ensure a safety shutdown of the whole system in the event of a failure. Small amounts of hydrogen, which can escape due to a leakage for instance, are led away via the ventilation hole (I) at the highest point of the room. The safety concept is evaluated with technical report by a third-party expert from TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH. It ensures safe operation without any additional explosion protection at the installation location. 6

Selcoperm SES Degassing and storage tank The degassing and storage tank is a mandatory component of the Selcoperm electrolysis system. In systems with several electrolysers, one tank for each electrolyser must be installed. The volume of the tank depends on the capacity level of the Selcoperm electrolyser. Engineered degassing and storage tanks are available on request (e.g. larger volumes than indicated in the table). The sodium hypochlorite solution can be dosed directly from the tank to the point of application. In this case, the volume of the tank must be selected according to the demand of sodium hypochlorite solution of the individual application. It is also possible to pump the sodium hypochlorite solution from the degassing and storage tank into separate storage tanks. Separate storage tanks and transfer pumps are available on request. One degassing fan is installed on the tank by default. To avoid a system shutdown due to a defective fan, an additional standby fan can be ordered. Installation set A special installation set is pre-installed at the degassing and storage tank. The use of this installation set is mandatory to ensure the compliance with the certified safety concept of the Selcoperm electrolysis system. Components Pos. 19 Selcoperm SES Gas warning system As a part of the safety concept, a gas warning system for hydrogen gas (H 2 ) must be installed at the installation location. A self-contained gas warning system with at least two sensors for each Selcoperm electrolyser must be used. The gas warning system has to provide two potential-free output contacts, which are directly connected to the Selcoperm electrolyser to shut down the whole system in case of gas leakage. The contact type of the output contact must be NC (normally closed) to ensure the safety shutdown even in case of wire breakage. Grundfos provides a suitable gas warning system meeting all these requirements. It provides the information needed at a glance via a comprehensive display and LEDs showing the status with different colours. The system can operate stand-alone or interface with alarm devices and control systems using several outputs.
