Large Solar Thermal Systems Austria Thomas Müller AEE - Institute for Sustainable Technologies (AEE INTEC) A-8200 Gleisdorf, Feldgasse 19 AUSTRIA Introduction of AEE INTEC Institute of Sustainable Technologies non-governmental R&D institute Location: Gleisdorf, Austria Staff: 28 Persons Focus of Work: Solar Thermal Systems Sustainable Buildings Sustainable Water Management -1 -

Market Potential for Large Scale Solar Thermal Systems Building Stock Multi-family Houses buildings in total (2001) Refurbishment activities: approx. 1% to 1,5% of the building stock per year Share of building stock with construction years before 1980: 68% Heat demand of buildings older than 1980: ca kwh/m².a Building Stock in Austria Single-family houses Multiple-family houses Heating demand [kwh/m².a] < Passivhouses from 1995 Year of construction Source: Statistik Austria HWZ 1991; Krapmeier, Althaussanierung mit -2 -

Multi-Family Houses Built Examples Monitoring project: 10 buildings, 370 dwellings heat distribution via 2-pipe networks total collector area: m² (812 kw th ), total storage volume: 102 m³ average solar fraction approx.: 15 bis 20% (hot water & space heating) Hydraulics: 2-pipe distribution network as standard Kollektorfeld Energiespeicher T3 Warmwasser T2 Kaltwasser Warmwasser Kaltwasser Kessel Warmwasser o o o Kaltwasser Solarthermal system: Low-Flow operation with single storage Heat distribution via 2-pipe network Hot tap water generated in the flats by sub stations -3 -

Advantages of Solar Assisted 2-pipe Networks return temperatures of 30 C assure an efficient operation of the solar thermal system distribution losses are reduced to a minimum, leading to highest possible system efficiencies (total heating system) the solar thermal system supplies inherently the space heating system improved comfort, no limit of hot water consumption and individual temperature control of each flat hot water is generated absolutely hygienic (no legionella problem) Economics Substitution of Fuel Oil Dynamic calculation of pay-back time Average pay-back time: 12 to 14 years -4 -

Legislative Framework Housing sector: funding by the Provinces direct subsidies from 12 to 30% of investment costs improved subsidies for construction of dwellings Province Styria: Solar thermal system is obligatory Hotel/Industry/Trade: funding by the government direct subsidy of 30% of investment costs two Provinces grant additional 10 16% klima:aktiv - Initiative Initiative of the Austrian Ministry for Environment to reduce the emission of green house gases 22 programs running currently: mobility programs energy programs solarwärme solar heat holzwärme heat from wood klima:aktiv house (new builings) etc. -5 -

klima:aktiv solarwärme solar heat 4 year program to boost the solar thermal market in Austria single-family houses multiple-family houses hotels Aim: 200,000 m² collector area installed per year in 2008 Status 2005: already 230,000 m² installed!! solarwärme Main Acitivities information brochures for target groups website: information events quality assurance training courses for installers and planers personal certificate support of planners lobbying consulting of local governments subsidies initiating/supporting of local solar campaigns -6 -
