KILEN SWEDEN S FIRST CRADLE TO CRADLE INSPIRED NEIGHBORHOOD? INVITATION ARCHITECTURAL COMMISSION

Ronneby wants your help! Gothenburg Jönköping Växjö Tingsryd Kalmar Helsingør Copenhagen Sölvesborg Karlshamn Karlskrona Kristianstad RONNEBY Malmö As a step in the municipality s C2C-efforts the central area of Kilen will now be developed. In this pilot project the municipality in collaboration with future private developers will convert a central industrial site into a sustainable neighborhood that leaves a positive footprint instead of just a less negative while strengthening municipal and regional competitiveness. In connection to this Ronneby municipality now cordially invites you to an architectural commission in the form of a workshop where ideas for how the area can be developed will be produced. the chosen intentions and to summarize the ideas in a master plan for the area. Much focus will be making sure that the goals support business development in the area and that the project becomes attractive to possible investors. Three teams will work from different starting points when they formulate the goals, after which they will collaborate around the production of the master plan. We now want your help to broaden our perspectives, develop ideas and find models for the future Kilen. We hope you will accept the challenge! The task will be to, based on the vision for the area, formulate goals for the area s development linked to 2

Vision The overall vision is that Kilen is to be Sweden s first neighbourhood that leaves a positive footprint instead of a less negative one. The vision has five subcategories that are: Hälsa Inspires Innovations The Kilen area inspires creative activities both in- and outdoors and for all ages. The technology in the area allows people to live here but work anywhere in the world. Kilen attracts many visitors interested in knowing how the municipality has succeeded to integrate the principles of Cradle to Cradle into planning, architecture and construction. The whole area has become a research centre for Cradle to Cradle in Sweden and Europe. Positive Impact on the Environment The Kilen area is planned and built in a way that captures and enhances the biodiversity of the area. Development of the area will create a greater diversity of flora and fauna. The area will generate more energy than it consumes by using solar, wind and hydro energy. Water leaving the area will be cleaner than water flowing into the area. Contributes to Human Health Kilen creates conditions for a good living environment for both inhabitants and visitors. Besides houses and flats there will also be places for recreation and other outdoor activities. Building materials are positive for human health by contributing to good air quality, clean water and a pleasant environment. A Part of the Centre and a Meeting Point for Everyone The Kilen area is a meeting point for everyone, regardless of age and background. The location between the beautiful river Ronnebyån and the travel center promotes meetings between those who live and work in, travel through or visit the area. It is easy to get to Kilen and on to the travel center, Brunnsparken, Karön etc. The area contributes to a richer street life, through all hours of the day and throughout the whole year, throughout the whole town. Beautifies Ronneby Bright and modern architecture will be the characteristic for buildings in Kilen connecting at the same time to the older buildings in the surrounding areas. The beautiful and well designed outdoor environment contributes to the feeling that the central area of the town extends from Brunnsparken through the Kilen area and travel center into the town center. The close proximity to Ronnebyån is seen as a great asset and the riverside will be frequently used for walking and recreation. This will strengthen the attractiveness of Ronneby as a place for new residents, new businesses and tourists. 3

The Kilen Area The Kilen area is centrally located in Ronneby and consists of a ca 5,5 ha area between the travel center and Ronnebyån (the workshop area is 9 ha). Within Kilen there is no existing housing. Most parts are remnants of a buildings suppliers company that previously had a shop in the area. The buildings are mainly simple and made of wood or steel. Within the area is the transportation hub with bus and rail services. The closeness to the railroad demands a safety buffer of 30 meters, which calls for innovative solutions. In east-west direction, the lack of connection over both the 4 railway and Kilen is noticeable. The natural environment primarily consists of the green area with trees and scrubland that stretches along the river. Through the green corridor along the river banks the Kilen area has contact with the spa park and the green environment there. Car traffic at Kilen today arrives via Fridhemsvägen, which is the only local road in the area. The railroad and river is a major limiting factor for accessibility for vehicular traffic at the moment. Part of the Kilen area - Picture from when the building suppliers were up and running. 6 Cradle to Cradle Our concept of eco-effectiveness means working on the right things instead of making the wrong things less bad. McDonough & Braungart Cradle to Cradle (C2C) is a revolutionary design concept developed by chemist Michael Braungart and architect William McDonough. The philosophy is about maximizing economic, ecological and social values by tackling and solving environmental problems, rather than simply reducing negative effects. It is about eco-effectiveness that is more far-reaching than eco-efficiency. C2C opposes the hypothesis that growth and welfare necessarily affect nature negatively. A starting point for C2C is well thought out, intelligent design at all stages that takes its inspiration from nature. Braungart and McDonough have defined three main principles: Everything is a nutrient for something else (eliminate the concept of waste) Items must be health-wise safe and designed to return to ecosystems or re-use. Materials are seen as belonging to one of two cycles the biological cycle and the technical cycle where they are either biodegraded or circulated into new products. This puts demands on the selection of materials, design of products, usage, etc. Use current solar income Maximizing the use of renewable energy is a prerequisite for sustainable growth over time. C2C involves the use of renewable energy (current solar income) which for example can be solar cells, solar panels, natural light, wave and wind energy and heat exchangers. Celebrate Diversity Nature is based on complexity and diversity. C2C accept that local conditions vary and that solutions need to be adapted. Social and natural environments characterized by variation and differences are sought after. It is also about diversity of architecture and diversity of uses. From a C2C viewpoint materials are seen as belonging to one of two cycles the biological or the technical where they either degrade biologically or are recycled and recirculated into new products. 6

About the Workshop Process The workshop process will be implemented in three stages - first a prequalification phase where three teams will be selected to participate in the workshop, then the workshop and lastly a report phase in which the teams put a final touch to the material and compile it into reports and material for an exhibition. The purpose of the workshop format is to encourage an interdisciplinary work form of cooperation, dialogue and exchange of information. Who are We Looking for? We are looking for teams that show they have a good understanding of urban planning, development and building with holistic approaches in mixed developments and housing projects. We expect the teams to have knowledge of sustainability concerning environmental, social and economical issues, preferably with a special focus on Cradle to Cradle. We want teams that can show experience in context-driven projects and innovative solutions. The teams should be interested in discussing the municipality s vision and goals for the Kilen project through trying a new innovative way to work the workshop format and be possitive about working openly and in a collaborative fashion with the other participants. Timeplan Last day to hand in tender 11 December 2013 The workshop March 2014 Hand-in of reports 11 April 2014 Exhibition and dialogue May/june 2014 How to qualify Do you want to join? Then it s time to take the next step and get the detailed specifications. They can be reached via from the 8th of November 2013 or via the qr code below. 7
