AMMONIUM BISULFIDE ON-LINE ANALYZER Steve Newland- Phillips 66 Joe Fillion- Invensys August 15, 2013

Topics Chemistry Project Objectives Field Test Design Features and Specs

Chemistry What is Ammonium Bisulfide (ABS)? Highly corrosive byproduct of hydrotreating and hydrocracking processes in refineries. How is it formed? Hydrotreating converts organic N and S compounds to NH 3 + H 2 S Reactor Effluent : NH 3 (g) + H 2 S(g) NH 4 HS Sour Water: NH 4 HS + H 2 O NH HS - + NH 3 (aq) + H 2 S(aq)

Chemistry Possible Analyses : total sulfur total ammonia total alkalinity API calculation method density conductivity

ABS ON-LINE ANALYZER Project Drivers: Reduced personnel exposure Better measurement precision and accuracy Improved corrosion control Process optimization

ABS ON-LINE ANALYZER Project Objectives: Improve accuracy to 10 % relative error Enable real time monitoring of ammonium bisulfide Perform refinery field test to optimize on-line analyzer design Develop commercial analyzer design based on field test results Install commercial analyzers at our refineries
