Dear members of the department, Our department supports the sustainability pact! Here you will find a list of some changes that will be implemented to pursue a more sustainable department policy. Please take some time for the environment: read the following tips and act on it now, that way you won t forget. Help us make a difference! And if we didn t convince you, then maybe this girl will: Thank you!!! The PP05 sustainability team (a.k.a. the green team)

ELECTRICITY 1) Make sure your computer is switched to standby mode after 15 minutes, and to sleep mode after half an hour. To adjust this, go to your control panel in the start menu and select power options. For help, please contact Wouter. 2) Turn off your screen saver. Your screen saver doesn t save energy because it keeps the computer from switching to standby or sleep mode. To turn it off, right click on the desktop and select Properties. Heb dit op internet gevonden; moet nog vertaald worden naar het nederlands 3) Computers that aren t completely turned off also consume energy! Using sockets with an on/off switchcan prevent this excessive energy consumption. If you don t have an on/off socket yet, send Wouter an . If you already have one, make sure to switch it off when leaving. 4) ALWAYS turn off the lights when you leave your desk, classrooms, meeting rooms, the kitchen, the toilets, the printer room, 5) The freezeron the 1 st floor will be turned off. If you need a freezer for research, please use the freezing compartment in the fridge on the 1 st floor. If you need to use the (bigger) freezer, ask Wouter to switch it on.

PURCHASES 1) Material that is no longer used, can be sold via the online UGent recycling shop always ask Wouter! 2) Remember that you can buy 2 nd hand material in the online recycling shop. That way we can do our share in cutting down on mass production and waste and their negative consequences on our environment. 3) Give your old computers (from work but also from home) to Wouter Close the gap( This organisation transports computers to Africa instead of throwing them way.

KITCHEN AND CATERING Coffee: Use 2 1/2 spoonsof coffee for a full pot! Better for the environment but also more tasty.

PAPER 1) We ask students to print papers, essays, reports two-sided and to not use plastic covers. Liesbet will discuss this at the faculty level and will try to make this obligatory. print on recycled or FSC-paper 2) We print courses on recycled or FSC-paper. Everyone involved in teaching has a responsibility in implementing this measure. For printing we already use recycled paper. 3) Teachers can post printer-friendly slides in PDF on Minerva, on top of the PPT-slides. These are PDF s of slides without background, house style, in black and white and with several slides on 1 page (e.g. 4 slides/page). Students can choose how they print the slides, but are encouraged to think about the environment. 4) We try to limit the use of paper as much as possible. For example, we do not print e- mails, we no longer print out articles (if you do, at least don t print them twice), If you print, try to do it as ecologically as possible: in economy mode, 2 pages per sheet, two-sided,! For now, printing two-sided is not possible for everyone because of the popularity of the DLASK printer and the danger of overburdening it. But you can copy two-sided! If you need to copy documents (for example documents/slides for meetings/guidance committee, ) print it one-sided and then copy two-sided: this is possible for everyone! Wouter will monitor the use of paper, so we can evaluate our commitment to using less paper! We are curious about the results?! To avoid wasting paper, please contact Wouter ASAP about problems with copiers and printers! 5) Use erroneous prints and copies as scrap paper! In the near future one printer (the Comenius) will use scrap paper. There will also be a box to collect scrap paper. Use this whenever it s possible, for example for spss-outputs and other non-official documents. 6) Add a message to your mail signature: Do not print this or Stay green, keep it on the screen.

7) Students only have to buy books that are necessary for the course. If not, just recommend them. Course material that students have to buy, print or copy, must have a purpose during the course.

HEATING 1) Use the thermostatic valves correctly! A moon means 14 C, a sun 20 C. The numerical indications goes in steps of 4 C. So "3" is 20 C, "4" is 24 C. "5" means constant heating. So if you re too cold or too hot, just change the number to slightly more or less than number 3. What is the number on the thermostatic valve in your office? 2) In rooms that are not being used and in some hallways the heating will be switched off. In line with this decision, the thermostatic valves in meeting rooms have already been locked. But this is not the case in all rooms and hallways. It is everyone s responsibility monitor this and change the position of the valves if needed!

TRAVELLING AND COMMUTER TRAFFIC 1) It could be interesting to install Skypefor skypemeetings. 2) Air traffichas a large environmental impact!for shorter trips (less than 8h) you better use eco-friendly alternatives (such as the train, or carpooling with colleagues if the location is difficult to reach) 3) Use a bike or public transport as much as possible. UGent already encourages this and also supports this financially. 4) There are company bikes available for staff to travel to other UGent buildings during working hours (e.g. could be useful for people coming to work by train or car, who don t have a bike at work). Three company bikes are available for staff members of FPPW. Ask Kris Erauw if you want to book one. 5) An alternative for commuter traffic is the electric bike. With an electric bike you still need to pedal, but you get help while pedalling. The power provided by the electric motor depends on your effort. As a result, cycling with an electric bike feels like having the wind behind you all the time. The electric bike can be a good alternative for people who live10-15 kmfrom work and think this is too much with a normal bike. The electric bike is much more eco-friendly than the car. UGent staff members can test an electric bike for free! Contact vzw StudentENMobiliteit ( 6) If you re interested in buying an electric bike, you can get a 15% discount at PDG Bikestore (for UGent staff members only) (
