Energy production is one of the greatest causes for CO 2 emissions and thus the entire industry has some serious rethinking to do. EU objectives state that CO 2 emissions should be decreased by 20 % before 2020 and by 40 % before It s safe to say that the clean trend is here to stay. 10 VAASA SETS THE EXAMPLE The MOST ENERGY EFFICIENT PUBLIC BUILDINGS in Finland. A WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANT produces 20 % of the district heating in the winter and 100 % in the summer. World-class SMARTGRID KNOWLEDGE is used in unique projects. Thanks to a biogas reactor, THE WORLD S LARGEST CONVERTED COAL FIRED POWER PLANT now uses 40 % biofuel. Vaasa was AMONG THE FIRST TO TURN WASTE INTO BIOGAS in Europe. Finland s FIRST LOW ENERGY NETWORK utilises heat from local sea bed sediments. The region s energy technology industry has CREATED 1,390 NEW JOBS in The OUTSTANDING REFINEMENT VALUE of the local energy industry is #1 in Finland by a good margin. In 2012 the Vaasa region received A NATIONAL AWARD (Environmental Deed of the Year) FOR SAVING 1 % OF FINLAND S ENTIRE CO 2 EMISSIONS.
