Sustainable Environment-friendly Industrial Production in India - Two case studies - World s Leading Trade Fair for Water, Sewerage, Waste und Raw Materials Management May 14 to Messe München Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Hartwig aqua consult Ingenieur GmbH Mengendamm 16, D Hannover

GIZ SEIP SEIP: Sustainable Environment-friendly Industrial Production Implementation agreement from 16 June, 2016 SEIP project is a part of the ongoing Indo-German Bilateral Development Cooperation SEIP is a joint project of - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) - Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) Focus on urban and industrial environmental management in India German contribution to the project is around EUR 5,000,000 (approx. 37 Crores INR) Implementation sites: Delhi, Haridwar and Vapi Objective: showcase solutions to reduce acute environmental pollution and improve resource efficiency in industrial production Slide 2

Slide 3 Hannover GIZ SEIP - Background Development in India is shaped by an advancing industrialization The Government of India has a vision to enhance the manufacturing sector s contribution to the gross domestic product to 25 per cent and to create 100 million new jobs over the course of a decade. Currently, there are nearly 3,000 designated industrial zones in India, some of which are very large, such as the industrial corridors, investment regions, and manufacturing zones. The risks associated with industrial development include increasing pollution levels, overuse of natural resources, and increasing amounts of waste and wastewater, leading to endangerment of ecosystems.

Slide 4 Hannover GIZ SEIP Project Activities Modernisation/upgradation of existing CETPs - Common Effluent Treatment Plants Conveyance systems industrial wastewater conveyance systems and storm water drainage Online monitoring system - individual industries, CETP, River Skills development for operators (technicians, helpers) of industrial wastewater treatment plant Environmental improvement in selected industries Awareness programms, clean-up drives Environmental Technology Platform Green rating and certification system for industrial areas New measures under policies/plans/programms

Case study I Monitoring systems for industrial wastewater Case study II Sewage sludge moisture reduction at CETP Vapi Structure Slide 5

Case study I Online Monitoring (2016 / 2017) Monitoring Systems for Industrial Wastewater Review of existing online / continuous monitoring systems Training for the target groups Review of existing enforcement directive Recommend a reliable easy manageable online/continuous monitoring system for the industrial wastewater treatment and its disposal Slide 6

Slide 7 Hannover Case study I Actions Field visits / Meetings/interactions with officials Review of existing directives and guidelines Remarks for guidelines and directives for online/continuous monitoring systems for industrial wastewater Implementation by the Central and State Pollution Control Boards Recommendations for Individual industries Wastewater treatment plant operators Environment regulatory agencies

Revision of the existing online monitoring systems Five CETPs in Delho area A RTWQM system in New Delhi (Real Time Water Quality Monitoring Sytem) Three ETPs One CETP in Vapi ETP of UPL LTD ETP of Richter Themes Medicare ETP of Bayer

Case Study II Sludge dewatering at CETP Vapi, Gujarat (2016 / 2017) Sewage sludge moisture reduction and its management at the industrial Common Effluent Treatment Plant in Vapi, Gujarat Review of information and identification of key issues Field visits and problem analysis Preparation of pre-feasibility report Case study II Slide 10

Case Study II CETP Vapi CACCO = Chemo Autotrophic Activated Carbon Oxidation

Case Study II Main waste water and sludge operation parameters Waste water inflow around 55,000 m 3 /d High loaded stream of 120 m 3 /d feed to UASB-Reactor (COD > 20,000 mg/l) Sludge production around 70,000 t sludge per year (with a Dry Solids Concentration of around 23 % DS and a volatile fraction of 52 %) Case study II Slide 12

Case Study II Recommendations Optimization/ New installation of an anaerobic sludge treatment (higher biogas production, less remaining sludge) Sludge drying (e.g. solar drying) (test shows DS > 90 % after 40 days for solar drying) Energetic use of the dried sludge to replace the sludge drying beds (reduction of space demand, smell, further emissions) Further options: Thermal hydrolysis Slide 13

Slusge drying beds Large space demand, relevant emissions Limited drying effectivity because of the sludge crust (layers below are not drying well) (Karur Pvt. Ltd) Bole-Lemi-Industrial Park Ethiopia

Solar drying Applied for municipal sludge and industrial sludge (e.g. textile factory in India) Surface of the sludge is broken off permanently Dry Solids Concentration > 90 % Dried sludge usable as energy source (e.g. Cement Factories) Dried sludge, hygienized, DS > 90 %

Conclusion GIZ SEIP projects supports a sustainable development in the industrial sector in India Online Monitoring as useful tool for operation and supervision Sludge treatment as one main open task in many industrial parks Sludge as energy source (biogas, as substitute fuel) Thanks to all project partners for the intensive technical exchange and discussions Contact: hartwig@aqua-consult.de, GIZ Slide 16
