1 CASE STUDY Toilets and baths to aggregate paths A bathroom ceramics and tile manufacturer in East London recognised the need to save money on waste costs, improve their environmental impact and increase profits. 3,000 Tonnes of ceramic and porcelain waste were being transported to landfill each year. This process had significant costs both economically and environmentally. The challenge was to find an alternative use for the by-product. BASIS Resource Efficiency Project (FREE Support for Birmingham and Solihull Businesses)

2 Toilets and baths to aggregate paths The Solution The project matched the business to a company which could recycle the ceramic and porcelain waste into an aggregate ready for use in the landscaping and manufacturing sectors. An innovative process was developed to crush and recycle the waste into a durable, decorative aggregate which was successfully marketed and is now in high demand. This not only diverted waste from landfill but provided an economic benefit. A direct revenue stream was derived from the waste as it became a by-product with a commercial resale value. The Results 80,000 additional sales revenue per annum 45,000 cost savings per annum 3,000 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill per annum 96 tonnes of CO2 reduction per annum About BASIS BASIS is a business-led programme, responding directly to the needs of your organisation, whatever sector that may be. 3 CASE STUDY New life for old pallets An automotive engineering company in the Midlands used wooden pallets to transport their goods, with all old pallets traditionally going to disposal. 200 Tonnes of wood waste were being transported to landfill each year. They recognised the need to save money on waste costs, improve their environmental impact by diverting landfill and increase profits. The process had commercial and environmental costs which could be reduced and the challenge was to find an alternative use for the valuable wood waste. BASIS Resource Efficiency Project (FREE Support for Birmingham and Solihull Businesses)

4 New life for old pallets The Solution The project matched the company to a business which specialised in wood reprocessing activities. They were able to recycle the old wooden pallets into new life pallets, with leftover wood shredded into landscaping mulches, playground and equestrian surfaces or animal bedding materials. This ensured valuable wood resources were protected by being reused and recycled into beneficial products. This not only diverted waste from landfill but provided an economic benefit. A direct revenue stream was derived from the waste as it became a resaleable by-product with a commercial re-sale value. The Results 200 tonnes of waste wood diverted from landfill per annum 200 tonnes of virgin materials saved per annum 3,600 cost savings per annum About BASIS BASIS is a business-led programme, responding directly to the needs of your organisation, whatever sector that may be. 5 CASE STUDY Where there s muck, there s brass A Yorkshire utilities company required an alternative disposal method for process sludges and filter cakes instead of land spreading and incineration due to high energy costs in moisture removal. The opportunity also created an incentive to re-think their composting of green waste due to over-capacity. The challenge was to see if both forms of waste could be recycled into a by-product with a commercial re-sale value, which would also provide environmental benefits. 6 Where there s muck, there s brass The Solution A specialist recycling company was able to blend and re-process both types of waste. They produced a quality soil product to PAS100 suitable for all general landscaping and construction needs. The low odour, peat like material has high nutrient and drainage properties, making it a desirable commercial product suitable for most landscaping needs. All parties continue to be involved in the successful project and the model has been adopted by other similar organisations across the country. The Results 720,000 in additional sale revenue per annum 180,000 tonnes diverted from landfill per annum 16,664 tonnes of CO2 reduction per annum 12 jobs safeguarded and 3 jobs created About BASIS BASIS is a business-led programme, responding directly to the needs of your organisation, whatever sector that may be. 7 CASE STUDY Smarter packaging procedures A major Northern Ireland based meat packaging business, suppling many large supermarket chains, recognised a need to reduce waste alongside improving their environmental impacts. The business already recycled some waste, but plastic packaging was being sent to landfill and other processing requirements had high energy costs due to inefficiencies. The company was aware of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in respect to its customers and challenged itself to reduce waste in all areas to drive process improvements and environmental cost. BASIS Resource Efficiency Project (FREE Support for Birmingham and Solihull Businesses)

8 Smarter packaging procedures The Solution The project identified plastic and metal packaging waste which could be recycled and a venture was implemented with a partner which proved commercially successful for both businesses. This provided cost saving benefits and diverted significant waste form landfill. The opportunity also provided an incentive to improve on site segregation of wastes and helped the company meet its supply chain obligations. The project also identified water and energy reduction strategies which are being implemented and are already demonstrating cost and environmental savings. The Results 280 tonnes of CO2 reduction per annum 5,729 commercial cost savings per annum 27 tonnes diverted from landfill per annum 40 tonnes of virgin materials saved per annum About BASIS BASIS is a business-led programme, responding directly to the needs of your organisation, whatever sector that may be.
